I wish to order a certified death certificate for a relative at the NYC Archives of
Vital Records. The online instructions give the possibility of ordering a "letter
of exemplification" for an additional fee. Does anyone know what a "letter of
exemplification" is? I've written the Archives office seeking an answer, but have
received no reply thus far.

Re: Birth certificates and birth research in France and Belgium #france

I posted a message 2 days ago for information about French & Belgian
birth certificates, wishing to fill in information about family killed
or possibly killed in the Shoah.

I have been overwhelmed by the response >from so many kind genners and
would like to thank those I have responded to directly and those I
haven't. I have received some very useful information which has filled
in gaps in my family's knowledge.

Two sisters of my wife's grandmother perished in Auschwitz, one with
her husband and 2 children HABERMAN, the other seemed to have been
the only victim but I have been informed that some records show the
family as SPIDZACK when I had found the mother as SPITSAK in other records.
I am now sadly aware that the 3 children also perished, though I have no
detail of the father.

I can now fill names, dates of birth and approximate deaths of 3 children
I was not aware of, UK knowledge only covered one child and now there
are 3.

I have been deterred >from seeking French birth certificates, but now I
don't need them to find facts. I may still follow this track.

A kind genner is helping me with Antwerp.

Genners are wonderful, thank you FrenchSIG.

Regards,

Barry

Searching for BASWITZ Frankfurt an der Oder #general

About 2 weeks ago I posted a message searching for relatives named BASWITZ >from
Frankfurt an der Oder, the children of the Max BASWITZ and Caecilie WEISS BASWITZ,
married in 1863. I now have more specific names and birth dates for these BASWITZ
children: Hans Carl (1864), Benno (1865), Hermann (1867), Walter (1869), Kurt
(1871), Elsbeth (1873 - perished in Holocaust) and possibly Gertrud BASWITZ STERN
(1881) and Margarethe BASWITZ WEISSTEIN(1874), if they are daughters of Max BASWITZ
and not some other BASWITZ. I know Gertrud and Margarethe perished in the
Holocaust, but Gertrud had a son, Kurt STERN who emigrated to NY with his wife and
sons Ralf/Rolf and Peter Michael. I have seen the ship's manifest, but no further
records on them. Ralf and Peter Michael could still be alive, as they were born
1930 and 1936, respectively.

I have found Hans Carl in London (Movinghere.org.uk)for 1939, but nothing on him
after that. Hermann shows up in Berlin directories up until 1925 in the family
printing business. Walter appears as a Wechselmakler in the 1907 Frankfurt/Oder
directory. Benno was a doctor and shows up in the 1922 Frankfurt/Oder directory.
Nothing at all on Kurt. I would love to know what happened to all these brothers
too.

Does anyone know which cemetery Jews >from Frankfurt/Oder would be buried in and how
to find burial records? If anyone has any information on these BASWITZ and/or
their descendants, please contact me directly at elamj@...

Martha, my father died five years ago. I went to the Chevra Kadisha to give all
the information for the death certificate. The gentleman was seated with a desk
between himself and me and he asked all the questions and filled out the
certificate himself. Even though I gave all correct answers and spelling, the
certificate arrived with my mother's maiden name spelled wrongly. In your case it
may have been the same, where someone filled it out for the mother even though she
was written as the informant.

Seeking a Researcher in Volhynia (Kovel, Lukiv) #ukraine

Orit Lavi

Dear Friends,

I would appreciate recommendations on a good, reliable researcher who
operates in Volhynia.
Please note that the "Professional Researchers" page under Volhynia in
the Ukrainian SIG site is out of date,
and my attempts to contact local researcher based on that page have failed.

Additionally, so far I failed to locate any archival resources for
Kovel and Lukiv, for the years 1870 onwards.
The RTRFoundation website does not list any for the above period
(excl. Holocaust related).
Any info on such resources would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Orit Lavi

More Info RE: Shmuel Amdurer #rabbinic

Panthersfan27@...

Hi,

My cousin discovered a few sources which refer to my ancestor R' Shmuel
Amdurer as R' Shmuel HaLevi. According to these sources, he may have
had a son Yehezkel who was the son-in-law of the Vilna Gaon for a short
period of time. The sources also refer to another son Moshe HaLevi, who
was ABD in Rakov where Shmuel Amdurer set up his court when he was
named Chief Rabbi of the Upper District and Minsk.

If anyone has any information concerning this possibility please
contact me. R' Shmuel as you may know was the grandson of the Ba'al
Beit Shmuel. Of course none of the books that either of them wrote
mention this fact to my knowledge.

Best Regards,

Michael Waas
