JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Hello all
Recently I found a search bureau of the Jewish Agency for Israel for missing relatives filled by my maternal grandmother about 50 years ago. The search result in the early 1950s was negative. The names that my GM was looking for were Mordehai and Ester Traw >from Rozniatov, children of Israel Traw. The Exact relation was not mentioned. I found 2 Yad Vashem Testimony pages for Israel Traw >from Rozniatov, the submitters were Mordechai and Ester. Unfortunately I failed to locate them, I doubt if they still with us but maybe their children are. To my best knowledge no one of my GM family survived WWII, it's a chance to rediscover the family. Any help concerning locating the submitters will appreciated Thank you Raanan wlosko Pleas contact Booly2006@... Tieger, Ludmer, Redish or Redicsh, Perl, Feier, Juran >from Galicia Perl >from Vienna. Levice {Leva/Lewentz}, Slovakia - the derelict synagogue.
#general
Celia Male <celiamale@...>
On a recent visit to Slovakia with two Austria-Czech genners - Frank Feiner of
Rotterdam and Jack [& Maureen] Jellins of Sydney - we looked for the Jewish cemetery in Levice and failed to find it. We did however find the Christian cemetery. Whilst stopping in a tree-lined square which had an aura of abandoned history about it, we looked up and realised we had parked in front of a derelict synagogue. Please look at this set of pictures to see what I saw, and more importantly, what the camera saw inside the synagogue. I could see nothing as it was so dark inside and the only accessible viewpoint was a hole in the door. I could hear the birds inside the building though - the windows are all broken. The result was a surprise when I got home and uploaded my pictures: Levice {Leva/Lewentz}, Slovakia - the derelict synagogue http://www.flickr.com/photos/cam37/sets/72157622074348822/ Please also look at the *detail* option [all pictures enlarge] and the map [my thanks to Frank, the excellent navigator on this trip]. As there are so few pictures, you may decide to choose a very short slide-show with {or without} notes. Not only is this synagogue derelict, it is tragic because of the deportations which took place in front of its door as late as 1944. It is interesting to note that Levice was under Ottoman rule until 1685. Did some Sephardic Jews >from the Ottoman Empire settle there and assimilate with the local community? That is a distinct possibility. There are a few messages on Levice in the archives {1996-2008} and I have sent all the correspondents a copy of this message, which they may not receive if their email addresses have changed since then. Judith Young's message in 2001 states that the Jewish cemetery was desecrated. Celia Male - London, U.K.

Bielsk Podlaski

Jose Klingbeil
Dear friends,
Does anyone know what genealogical sources are available for the city of Bielsk Podlaski (near Bialystok)? It seems that there is no record at all in JRI although the only LDS microfilm (only for BMD of year 1835) is shown as "complete". There could be a Book of Permanent Residents but I found no trace at all. A census seem to exist in Belarus (found in Routes to Roots Foundation) but no index available on Internet. Can someone help me find these sources? I'm looking for KLESCZELSKI families. Best, Jose Klingbeil Jewish Kutno Group http://jewish.kutno.free.fr

Information re Rabbi Uri Miller of New Orleans and Baltimore Synagogues
#general
bud484bg@...
Dear researchers:
I have about exhausted my resources in my search for information about Rabbi Uri MILLER who was the rabbi of Ansche Sfad Synagogue/Beth Israel Synagogue in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1944 and Beth Israel Synagogue in Baltimore, until he passed away at the age of 66 in June of 1972. I have not been able to find an obit mentioning surviving family members- or cemetery information in newspapers ( the Baltimore Jewish Times). During his lifetime, he was President of the Synagogue Council of America and was part of the Civil Rights movement and was on the program in Washington, DC with Martin Luther King, Jr. Does anyone have any information or can supply a link? (FYI - Rabbi Miller performed the marriage service for my then soldier groom and I, in the Rabbi's study, in New Orleans, in March 1944). Beatrice Markel

been easier to emigrate if the immigrant claimed to have a close relative. Don't rush to write someone off on that basis - you won't know if she is a sibling until you trace through the birth records. My great-grandfather Nathan Paderefsky is listed in the 1900 New York census with his wife and children and, along with them is Jacob, a brother. Nathan in 1900 was 38 years old, Jacob is listed as 20 years old - a difference of 18 years! Is Jacob a full brother, a half-brother or perhaps no "true" brother at all? I don't know yet. But, if he is a full brother or even a half-brother, suddenly my tree just got a lot larger. Bev Potter Colorado

If someone wanted to emigrate to the US it was considered much easier for
processing if the immigrant claimed to have a close relative. It was insurance against the possibility of being denied entry. The same thing shows on the manifest for my grandfather and his sister and their father who all arrived together. They respectively cited an unnamed sister and daughter. This really confused me because I could find no evidence that there was a close relative already in the US. Joe Hirschfield Portage, MI HIRSCHFELD, HIRSZFELD, LINDENBAUM, BUXBAUM, BUCHSBAUM- Skwarzawa (Skvaryava), Sielec Bienkow (Selets), Glinyany, Jaryczow Nowy (Novyy Yarychiv)-GALICIA MINOFF, MINOWICKI, MINOWITZKI, TOBIASZ-Brest Litovsk, Wysokae Litovsk-BELARUS dbschreiber@... writes: I have recently found that my maternal grandfather and his brother each cited a much older sister (about 15 years) in Boston who they were going to see on their ship manifests...if an immigrant of that time would be likely to call someone a sister who may not have been one.
