Dear HUSI friends

I am now in the process of putting the Husi shtetLink site together
with the help of our technician, Greg Meyer. I am so grateful to the
following people for their photo contributions: Lea Gedalia, Rita
Margolis,
Linda Mormile, Nancy Kushner, Sara Scher, Bill Losner, Estabell
Gettis, and Ken Golden. Others--and there are many of you-----
Please SCAN IN YOUR PHOTOS WITH CAPTIONS OF SOME SORT.
Once more I ask you to RESPOND in some way.

I plan to start a page with just paragraphs of information
about families without old photos. You can write a few sentences
about your memories, or stories >from grandparents about
the "old country". It can be funny, sad, or a remembrance of
a particular person or event--- Anything you want to add.
DO IT TODAY.

The site looks good and though for now it is small,
in time it will grow.

I thank you all and would like to wish everyone a very
Sweet New Year. Shanah Tovah

Hello everybody.
I wish to thank all you very much for your quick and extensive answer to
my previous mail (I have received eleven mails to my private email
address and I have answered each one apart).
I wish to say something else: Four of you (over eleven) have opined
above Alla Chastina (whom I had mentioned previously) and all opinions
were good, so I wish to apologize and keep Chastina's reputation clean.
Perhaps (as some of you had said), "If the researcher did not send you
what you need, it means there is no such record" and "I would suspect
that what you received >from Alla is the best she could find!"
Warmest regards to all you, people!

Galicia (the earliest know Jewish community in Lviv was in 1280) did not
escape the Mongol invasion. Although Jews did not exist there in large
numbers, we as genealogists know that for every one ancestor that
far back in
history, hundreds if not thousands of descendents with her genes may be
produced.
You don't have to be a genealogist to know this, and it is probably
more likely that the average rape victim has zero descendents.
But the main problem with the "mongol rape" theory is that it ignores
all other possible sources of "asian" features in any Eastern European
population. (The Asian fold is not rare among echt German and Slavic
populations as well). I can think of at least five without checking
with Wikipedia:
1. The Karaites of NE Europe, of Turkic origin and a Judaic faith,
brought to Lithuania >from the Black Sea area by a Lithuanian prince.
2. The large substrate of Finnic peoples in NE Europe: the
surviving Finnish, Estonian, and Livonian (in Latvia) peoples have mostly
been genetically Europeanized, but the band of Finnic tribes across Northern
Asia as far as the Pacific still show the Asiatic features that they
brought to Europe. The magyar ancestors of the Hungarians also brought
asian features to Europe.
3. I have read (and seen at least one photograph) that in the 19th
Century mustered out Jewish Cantonists in Asian parts of
Russia could marry local women and bring them back to their home
villages. Since the women were animist or Moslem they could be
converted to Judaism (presumably it would have been more difficult to
convert Russian Orthodox women).
4. The Russian (and later Soviet) army had units of soldiers (not to
mention Cossaks) >from Asian regions who at one time or another made
it as far as Paris. No Mongols are necessary for military rape rampages.
5. How common is/was the epicanthic fold in the "original"
Indo-European and Semitic populations of Europe and the middle
East? I assume there must have existed some genetic potential for
this feature in order for it to be selected for and spread among the
Asian population. I suspect that if you could have surveyed the
Jewish population of Judea before the great expulsions you would have
found individuals with this feature, without benefit of mongol rape.

How to locate someone in Israel? #general

Micah Salb

I have a distant family member in Meah Shearim, Jerusalem. I have her
name and address --- that is, her address where she lived in 1988! I do
not even know how we are related, but I want to get in touch with her
and add her to my family tree.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have tried Steve Morse's English
Front-End for Bezeq's Israeli Phone Directory, unsuccessfully.

Thanks.

Searching for HORAK BERGER #general

Shaul Berger <shaul@...>

Hi,

I hope you can help me in my family roots research of my father's branch in
19th century Slovakia, near Rimavska Sobota.

I am searching for relatives of HORAK (changed >from Berger) Moshe who was a
pharmacist and lived in Rehovot Israel. He was a second cousin of my late
father Laci BERGER (b.1916 to Samuel BERGER in Serke now called Sirkovce, 10
km south of Rimavska Sobota) . My last information on Moshe HORAK is >from
1988 when he filled testimony pages for his parents and brother that
perished during Holocaust (no luck with local tel numbers). His father
Julius (Gyula) BERGER was born in 1888 in Rimavske Zaluzany to Mor BERGER
and Marie STEINER. He has several siblings. Golda Gizella (b.1878), David
(b.1876), Lina (b.1874) and Sandor (b.1889). His father married Regina FRIED
in 1913. They had 2 children, Moshe (maybe was called Miki) that I am
searching for and Imre (b.1916) that was killed by the Germans.

More info about his siblings - Gizella married SCHWARTZ Miksa, David married
Emma FREISINGER in 1903, Lina married Samu GESCHEIDT in 1890 and Sandor
married Fabian SZEREN in 1909.

I would appreciate if anyone related would contact me at
