documents for leaving Poland #general

Miriam Eguchi <miriamj@...>

I had a grand-aunt who left Lodz and immigrated to the U.S. via Hamburg in
1914. I would like to find evidence of when and under what first name and
birth date she left Lodz. I imagine she would have needed papers of some
sort to leave Lodz and travel to the U.S. Would the Polish authorities have
records of issuing such papers, application forms, etc.? Would there be exit
records? How can I go about researching this?
(I already have the Hamburg embarkation and Ellis Island landing records--
I am now only interested in something that might be on record in Poland.)
Any advice appreciated.
Miriam

Could Mania be Malka? #general

Miriam Eguchi <miriamj@...>

Does anyone know of any examples of a woman calling herself Mania if she was
born Malka? (I know that Mania is usually associated with the name Miriam,
but in this case the woman in question could not have been Miriam.)
(Incidientally, the fact that my name is Miriam has nothing to do with this
question.)

Re: Peruvians #general

I wish to thank those who responded to my e-mail about the use of the word
'Peruvians'. I had mentioned that Milton Shain had proposed some suggestions
for the term's origins, and I should have spelled these out. There were three
of them:.1. It was an acronym of the Polish and Russian Union, a club in
Kimberley; 2. It referred to Jews who had lived in Baron de Hirsch's
agricultural colonies in Argentina before going to South Africa
[but why Peruvian?]; and 3. It was a mistaken reference to the ancient
Latin term for Poland. I still have twp problems:a. These are all
anecdotal and one would like some defiinite evidence to support one or
other of them; and b. All the accounts refer to South Africa and do not
explain how the term came to be used in England.

I am planning on visiting Belarus for a one day visit to Dunilowitz and
Glebokie in August and am interested in anyone else's experience in visiting
these towns. Has anyone worked through the Jewish Heritage Research Group
in Belarus? (Please respond privately to me on this question)

My great-grandparents, Schloime and Malka Raichel (later changed to
Rothchild) and all of their grandchildren came >from Dunilowitz. My
great-grandfather's parents were Pinchus Mordechai Raichel and Malka
Liebowitz. My great-grandmother was born in Glebokie to Pinches Scher and
Chaja Gitl Gold. I would be interested in any potential linkages as an
additional line of inquiry. I will be in Vilnius for a month prior at the
Vilnius Yiddish Institute and hope to do some research in their archives as
well.

Re: SPILKIN/SPILKA/SZPILKA - Rechitza #belarus

NORMAN FUHRER

We have been searching for information regarding SPILKIN >from Rechitza,
Russia.

Our oldest uncle, Joseph FUHRER, married Julia Spilkin/Spilka, probably
between 1910 and 1913. Thru the 1930 Chicago Census, we find that Julia
arrived in USA in 1910 (we have not been able to find her on the passenger
lists).

Their first child Saul David was born in Pocahontas, VA in 1913. Next child
a daughter was born in St. Louis, MO in 1915. Subsequent children were born
in Franklin/Zeigler IL. The family eventually moved to Chicago in 1929.
Julia died in June 1958. We believe she was born in Rechitza abt 1886-1888.

We found an arrival of Bassia and Benzion SPILKA in 1913 -- destination
Pocahonta, VA!!! We believe them to be Julia's relatives.

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Searching for Richard Knebel in Australia #hungary

Jerry Zeisler <jzeisler@...>

All,
I am searching for Richard Knebel or his daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and
Anthony Coghlin, who at last contact were living in the Sydney, Australia
area. Richard is a descendant of the Baron Groedel family. Until a few years
ago, he ran a business in Sydney called Groedel Kitchens, and later Knebel
Kitchens.

Richard and I had been in contact around the 2001-2002 timeframe, but have
since lost contact and I have been unable to locate him. I have uncovered an
enormous amount of family information, as well as having recently contacted
some of his cousins.

Hopefully someone knows where I can find him.

Thank you.

Dear Genners:

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my post about
Beider's Dictionary of Russian Surnames.

For the benefit of future queries on that subject, there are
several sources.

1. 1993 Beider Dictionary of Russian Surnames can be searched on
the well known commercial Site (Big A) for Family History.

2. Check your local Jewish Genealogical Society Library.
They may have a copy or other Beider Dictionaries, too.

3. Check with a large University Library.
(Stanford University Library has 2008 Edition and it is close to me).

The knowledge and kindness of this Group always amazes me.

Thanks so much.
