Looking for Abraham MAISLER in Austria #austria-czech

Louis Hegwer <h.hegwer@...>

Fellow Searchers,
While I have been a subscriber to this SIG for some time, this is my
first post.
I am looking for assistance locating the birthplace and relations of
my wife's g-grandfather Abraham MAISLER, born c. 1840.He immigrated to
NYC then San Francisco with his family in 1903 >from Craiova, Romania.
He died in 1919. The US census of 1910 states his birthplace as
Austria and his primary language and literacy as German.
Family tradition tells that Abraham left home at a young age (between
8 and 18), caught a ride on a wagon "over the mountains," and settled
in Craiova, Romania where he married, raised a family and resided
until 1903.
While MAISLER (and its alternatives) is not that common a name, I
have yet to be able to establish any links to his early years and
family.
Any help or hints will be greatly appreciated.

French SIG #France New Book in French translation! #france

Rosanne Leeson <rdleeson@...>

Dear fellow FrenchSIGgers,

I have just been informed of the availability online of a French
translation (still in progress) of a book, originally mostly in German,
about the Jews of Latvia, part of the Jews of Latvia exhibition on the
virtual Museum of Family History. The author, Max Kaufmann, a
survivor, wrote it only 2 years after the war.

You will find it, as well as an English translation at:
http://www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/mfh-churbn-lettland.htm

I have no financial interest in this work or site, and this notice is
permitted under the JewishGen one-time only rule.

Dear Jonava researchers and researchers of nearby towns,

We have made exciting progress on the Jonava Yizkor Book translation
from Yiddish and Hebrew into English. See
http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Jonava/Jonava.html.

Our translator has brought the many photos of our families to life
by providing in English the names of individuals in the captioned photos.
Frequently there are names of people >from Kedainiai, Ukmerge, Kaunas and
other towns in the photos. Youth groups >from more than one town gathered
together; sometimes a leader >from a larger city such as Kaunas came to
Jonava to help organize a group.

Some photos are missing the names of some of the subjects. Perhaps
you will be able to help us identify them so that future generations
reading the Jonava Yizkor Book translation will have their names.

You can see a digitized version of the entire Yizkor Book.
http://yizkor.nypl.org/index.php?id=1186.

I am indexing the names, given and surname, of all individuals
mentioned in the chapters translated so far, including names in the
photo captions. There are well over 350 distinct family surnames.
There are details of individual families and their relationships.
We think of a Yizkor Book as memorializing the Shoah, which it does,
but the Yizkor Book also details and revels in the depth of life
experiences and the richness of social, political and religious life.

We have used the last penny of your donations to date. Your
donation now of any amount that is comfortable is welcome and necessary
to continue the translation effort. To help, go to
www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=23.

Thank you, and I look forward to your participation,

I'm looking for family related to Ahuva (nee FINBERG) GORNIK, born 1911
in Gelvan (near Vilna) and died in Israel in 1992. Ahuva's father was
Pinchas and her paternal grandparents were Leib and Ester FINBERG.

My GGGF was Eliash ben Leib FINBERG and my GGM Feiga (nee FINBERG)
LANDSMAN was born in Gelvan in 1856.It seems likely that Ahuva's
grandfather Leib was a brother of my GGM Feiga.

I have a kind offer >from a researcher in Israel to contact the Chevra
Kadisha to get contact information for Ahuva's family but I thought
I would first

a) confirm my hypothesis/research the FHC BMD microfilms
for Gelvan for the appropriate time periods (ordered last week) and

b) see if anyone on the discussion group was familiar with this family.

If this sounds familiar, please contact me privately at

only tell you who's where and how to reach them, but also how common a surname is,
etc. http://www.dastelefonbuch.de/ reports nobody by that surname anywhere in
Germany. For other countries, just Google telephone directory <country>.

Yiddish Theatre and Vadeville #YiddishTheatre vaudeville relative #yiddish

My father's first cousin was in vaudeville under the names of Benny Platt and
Benny Howard. We knew him as Ben (Benjamin) Platt. He said he palled around with
Ed Wynn and Bert Lahr, although he obviously never had their success. I also saw,
briefly, on a TV special, a mention of the Howard Brothers.
The family knew he had married (a non-Jewish woman) and had a son, but they were
estranged.
When I knew him when I was a child, he was a salesman for Revlon. Our family
lived in Philadelphia, and he had an unmarried sister, Sue Platt, in New York
City. Is there some way to learn about him and his descendants? I have
professional photos of him in costume.

Minsk Archives not accepting genealogical requests? #belarus

David R. Brill

A few weeks ago I sent a search request letter to the National Historical
Archives of Belarus in Minsk. I was disappointed to receive in reply an
e-mail >from the Director stating that the archive cannot accept my request
"in 2009, in connection with a large number of requests," along with an
admonition that "the execution of requests is not the main activity of the
archive." (I never said it was.) A somewhat Kafkaesque response, as it
leaves open the possibility that they may be able to accept it later. I am
wondering if others have had the same recent experience. Is this a new
policy of the NHAB, or is it truly a temporary response to a heavy backlog
of genealogical requests? I notice that the web page of the NHAB
(http://niab.belhost.by/arhiv/uslugi/) continues to list a schedule of fees
for genealogical services, so I am hopeful that it is the latter.

Hello,

I have discovered I have a second cousin in Munich. She had written a letter of
testimony at Yad Vashem to her father in 1999 and so I have her address and phone
number. At that time she must already have been quite old.

Her name is Eva Adele VOHRYZEK( nee. Dittel) She lived at Alfred Neumann Anger in
Munich (I have the full address) Her father was Hans DITTEL (b. 13/7/1892) and her
mother was Kementine SCHNEIDER.

Can anyone with contacts or knowledge of the city of Munich help me to find out if
she is still alive or whether she had/has any family there. I cannot try to phone
her as I don't speak German. Pls respond to me direct at peterw@...
