Re: Scanning of old photos #general

Of course, more is better BUT make sure your scanner is actually
scanning at 1200dpi.

In my experience, cheaper scanners scan at 600dpi and the extra
resolution beyond 600dpi is created by software, not by the scanner.
To work at higher resolutions, you may also have to add RAM to your
computer.

Is there any recomendation on the resolution (number of dpis) to
preserve old photos?

My very simple scanner will allow >from 200 to 2400. Simple thinking is
that the bigger the better, specially expecting for tools to upgrade
the pictures (old and cracked). But if I scan in 1200, then my pc wont
even work with the file.

Re: Scanning of old photos #general

Gal Buki <buki@...>

You should scan them at least with 300dpi.
If you want to have the option to print the picture in the future in a
bigger size then you have to scan it with more dpi. (e.g. 2x the size =
600 dpi)
It also helps to scan with more dpi if you want to restore old pictures.
Here it could make sense to scan with 1200 dpi.

Also very important is the bit depth. Take here as much as possible.

If you don't have any option to change this setting try VueScan from
http://www.hamrick.com/ .

Best,
Gal Buki

Albrecht JONAS Born Gladenbach, Hessen, Germany - Lived in Sweden After the War #general

Linda Shefler

According to Pages of Testimony submitted by Albrecht JONAS for his mother
Berta nee ZELLER, and his step-father Nathan EHRENREICH, Albrecht JONAS (son
of Julius JONAS), born Feb 1915 in Gladenbach, Hessen, Germany was living in
Goteborg Sweden sometime after the war. Unfortunately, the PoTs aren't
dated.

I believe that Albrecht had a half brother Rudolf EHRENREICH. I cannot find
any evidence that he perished during the war, but I don't know what happened
to him.

If anyone is aware of either of these men I would greatly appreciate hearing
from you. They are a part of my Gruenebaum family originally from
Zuentersbach. Please respond privately.

Many thanks.

Born on a ship...birthplace? #general

Mjn519@...

If a person was born on a ship, on its way to NY, what would they put down
as their birthplace? I have one relative with 3 different birthplace
listed....NY, Russia and United States of America. I haven't found his
passenger list yet. So, what would be proper as his birthplace if born on a
ship ...New York (his destination)?

Re: Question regarding Geni family trees #general

Joseph Fibel <jfibel@...>

I agree with Gina.

Actually, I did not put any of my trees on Geni. What happen is that
I sent branches of our trees to people on those branches and they
started Geni trees, which as Gina says soon gets out of control.

I would like to comment on the query regarding Geni family trees by

JKLAYMAN@...

I have been unable to find anything regarding my father'family. until 1917
they lived in Dnepopetrovsk(Yekaterinaslav).
I also know that there were 11 siblings in the family. My grandfather had a
very profitable hardware business, that they were very middle class as
they also had a dasha somewhere. Any help would be very greatfully appreciated.

Tomaspol? #general

gloria lenon <glenon@...>

My grandfather, Edward Rood, was >from Tomaspol, came through England, sailed
on the Canopic to Boston and settled in Chelsea. I am trying to find out
more about his town, Tomaspol, and his family. He said for many years that
the spelling of his last name was not changed when he came here. His father
started a shul in Chelsea, but I do not remember the name of it. I believe
it is now a church.

I would like to know more about his family if I can, so I am reaching out to
anyone who might know about Tomaspol. Thank you

Finding Passengers from South America to NYC on Steve Morse's website #general

Ellen & Sal Barbieri <elsal@...>

On www.stevemorse.org Ellis Island Gold Form:

I recently found an Italian who was no where to be found entering NY. Since
I know many went back & forth to South America, I entered last residence Rio
de Janiero & ethnicity Italian & found him.

I did a sampling of last res: Rio de Janiero & ethnicity Russian - 47
passengers.
ex. # 19 on index GUERHMAN, Benzion. All 4 passengers with him listed race:
Hebrew, gives names & addresses of Jews left in Rio & persons going to.

from sampling of last res: Buenos Aires & ethnicity Lithuanian - 68
passengers
Passenger RIKERTIENE, Zelma on index listed race: Hebrew with 16 others on
page listed race: Hebrew.
last res: Buenos Aires & ethnicity Russian - 3,240 passengers

While looking for the Italian, I noticed the following ethnicities:
Portugese, Hungarian, German, Austrian, Holland, Barbados, Syria, Turkey,
Roumania, France, Canada, Greece, Sweden, England, Bulgaria, Lithuania,
Bavaria, Spain, Armenia. I found a fairly large number of transposed first &
surnames, so scanning the index is better than looking up individual names.
Also, lots of misspelled names, so best to scan index or use name
sounds-like.

You can enter other ports: La Plata, Argentina; Sao Paolo, Brazil; Santos,
Brazil
Manifests after 1906 give place of birth in Europe. Think we may be
surprised to find relatives who unbeknownst to us were in South America.
