dual patronymics #belarus

Hello:

I have found some of my grandfather's grammar school forms >from Grodno
in the late 1890s. On three different forms his name is listed as
"Joseph Naumovitch-Girshovitch Adunsky." This is the only place we
have seen the hyphenated patronymic. His father was Nahum; so was
Girsh (Hirsh) his grandfather? Was this a common naming convention at
the time? Thanks for any insights.

Re: Balassagyarmat Cemetery #hungary

Dear Karl,

I am responding to your query in the H-SIG Digest of July 18.

I visited the Balassagyarmat Jewish cemetery in late May, where I also have
relatives buried.

I met a man by the name of Béla Majdán who is presently working on a list of
all the gravestones in this cemetery. I was given a book that this man
published in 2004; perhaps I could look up if some relatives of yours are
mentioned therein?

Unfortunately though his English is very limited and I have sent him a
follow-up e-mail to my visit, but to date have not had a response. FYI, his
email is: <snip>

I would be interested in how your investigations go.

I hope this is of some assistance.

As I am a very new member, has any other information with regard to this
cemetery been previously made available to this group?

Hello Sonja Marder,

I have very recently joined this group and saw your message re Kojata in the
H-SIG Digest for July 18.

I believe the town you are looking for is called Kajatha in Slovakia and
Kajata in Hungary, as this town's current location is in both Slovakia and
Hungary. I believe it is in the county of Abauj-Torna in the district of
Fúzér.

I hope this is of some assistance.

One possible source might be the Museum of Hungarian Speaking Jewry in Zvat,
Israel. I have been able to recieve cemetery information in the past, after
making a donation.

Re: Record of Detained Alien Passengers #general

All females traveling alone, regardless of age, were detained until picked
up by a male. Minors were detained too. If you found her on a detention
list, you should be able to find her name on the ship's passenger list as
well -- possibly under different spelling. That would give you another
chance at finding who she was traveling to .

Requesting Translation please -- Polish and Russian #general

Hello Genners:
I would like translations of these documents that I posted on Viewmate. The
events occurred in Poland but the documents may be in either Russian or Polish.

I would greatly appreciate it if I could have a very complete translation of
the documents as I am trying to find all the names associated with this
family. I believe my great great grandmother was Estera Gitla Krzewin with
her maiden name as Teperowicz with father Chemia and mother Mirka. My great
great grandfather should be Lejba Krzewin but I don't know his parents'
names. I got the records >from the LDS library after finding the films on JRI
Poland.

Thank you in advance.

Dear fellow genners,
I just found the date of death of Henry Deutel on the SSDI;
Last Residence and Last Benefit: 11561 Long Beach, Nassau, NY

He was the son of William and Bessy Deutelbaum.
He was married to Rose Levine, in Bronx, NY on 29th of June 1930.

As I live in Israel, I believe I do not have access to the NewsPapers
that might have carried his obituary (if any).

Please help and respond directly to me.

Town Schalen in Germany? #general

gloria resin <gjresin@...>

Dear Genners,

I found my great grandparents immigration record today-they arrived at
Castle Gardens in 1888. I understood that they came >from Lithuania
but the record says their residence was Schalen, Russland and that
they were German. I assume that's Russia but has anyone heard of the
town Schalen or one that sounds like it in Germany? Maybe they just
lived there for a short time before leaving for the US but I'm
wondering if perhaps they married there and if there are records to be
found in this town. I don't see a mention of a town with this
spelling in Jewish Gen. Does anyone have an idea what it could be?
