Testimonies in Sweden after the Holocaust #lithuania

Seth Jacobson <seth@...>

We are editing an 85 page old notebook >from 1945-46 containing testimonies
by Holocaust survivors who arrived in Sweden after the Second World War.
Most of the survivors later emigrated to either Israel or North America. The
document is planned to be published as a memorial book with the temporary
name "The Testimonies of Odengatan 28".

The notebook contains basic information on the death of an estimated more
than 600 Holocaust victims, as presented to the late Rabbi Avraham Israel
Jacobson of the small Jeshurun Synagogue in Stockholm. For an initial
impression of the character of the document, we have posted a sample page of
the document, including graphic legends, at
http://66.118.156.177/odengatan_legend_page_26.jpg.

For the documentation project we are initially looking for witnesses who
remember the circumstances under which the testimonies were given. During
the coming winter we plan to post a detailed index of victims and witnesses
on a dedicated web page.

The testimonies were recorded in Rabbi Jacobson’s own handwriting in Yiddish
or Hebrew, and typically include the name of the victim, the spouse's name,
the community where the victim lived or was born, the circumstances of the
victim's death and sometimes additional information of genealogical
interest. Most, but not all, of the testimonies relate to Holocaust victims
from Romania, Hungary and Poland.

There will be light refreshments served. We are also starting our 2011
membership drive at this meeting. For those who renew or join,
the membership will be good through December 2011! As in past years,
those who join or renew "at" or "before" the December 6 meeting and
attend our December 6 meeting are eligible to have their name drawn for
great genealogical gifts. Membership forms are on our website: www.JGSCV.org
under membership. Annual dues are $25 for an individual and $30 for a
family. Anyone may join JGSCV.

Date: October 4, 2010 Monday 7:00-9:00 p.m. Please note the different day
of week and time of day for this meeting.

Program: Ost Meets West: Immigrant Film Moguls, Emigre Directors, and the
Rise of Film Noir

A group of Eastern European Jews, who headed most major American film
studios, founded the Hollywood film industry. Another influx of
German/Austrian Jewish film directors were driven to the US by the Nazis in
the 1930s. A number of them, such as Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, Otto
Preminger, and Edward G. Ulmer would play a determining role in the rise of
what was later called "film noir". * The speaker will examine the ethnic
origins of the two groups and how their different backgrounds enabled their
considerable contributions to the cinema, and in particular "film noir".

Speaker: Vincent Brook has a Ph.D. in film and television >from UCLA and
teaches media studies at UCLA, USC, Cal-State LA, and Pierce College. He is
the author of Something Ain't Kosher Here: The Rise of the "Jewish" Sitcom
and dozens of journal articles, essays, and reviews. Brook's book, "Driven
to Darkness: Jewish Emigre Directors and the Rise of Film Noir will be
available for purchase for $20. Please bring cash or check to purchase the
book.

* Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood
crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual
motivations. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as
stretching >from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is
associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in
German Expressionist cinematography.

We will also have our new features of the schmoozing corner with a senior
member of JGSCV facilitating available for 15 minutes before the
meeting to answer questions attendees may have about their genealogy and
JGSCV member, Diane Wainwood, will be reporting on "The Thirteenth Tribe "
about the ancient Khazar Empire by Arthur Koestler. (this book report is
held over >from the last meeting when Diane was unable to attend).

The Jewish Genealogical Society of the Conejo Valley and Ventura County is
dedicated to sharing genealogical information, techniques and research tools
with anyone interested in Jewish genealogy and family history. There is no
charge to attend the meeting.

Our rotating traveling library will have Categories A and B. To see
which books are listed under which category, please go to our website,
www.JGSCV.org and look under traveling library. The books are available
starting 30 minutes before the program to shortly after the program.

What is the language of this and the other documents? Are they
original or translations? In the latter case, >from what language?
from what geographical area are the documents? All this is
relevant to know if you want to go beyond educated guessing.
Actually I believe that these questions should always be asked
when trying to understand the meaning of unusual words in old
documents - unless the origin is obvious, of course.

Dear Siggers,

I would like to share with you a website that I recently came across that
might be of interest to many of you. The site is:
http://www.zanikleobce.cz/index.php?lang=d and it literally has to be
"mined" for it has so much information. The name is somewhat of a misnomer
for it deals not only with vanished places but also with many that have not
vanished. The site is available in German and Czech, however for those that
speak neither, I recommend downloading Google "Get 1 - click translation
from your browser's toolbar' >from
http://translate.google.com/translate_tools?hl=en&sl=el .Right click on
"English" and left click on "Add to Favorites". When viewing a site you want
to translate, go to Favorites or Bookmark and select "Translate to English".
It is machine translation which is not perfect but is of great help.

One site within this site is
http://www.zanikleobce.cz/index.phplang=d&zdroj=2446 which deals with dozens
of synagogues that existed and a few that still exist in the CR. Not only
are there descriptions of vanished places but also pictures and maps showing
their locations. Happy viewing.

database was constructed by "transliteration [that] was done using paper

Is anyone aware of the availability of the original Russian text (preferably

Skvira - Baitszman and Rabinovich families #ukraine

Zohar@...

I am trying to find information on some residents in the town of
Skvira (Skvyra) in the Ukraine, Kiev district.

Specifically I am looking into the history of 2 families that lived
there >from around 1900's to 1943 ; Baichman (or Baitszman) and
Rabinovich. The specific people are:

+ Baruch Baitszman - head of the family. His origins are unknown, but
it is believed (>from stories) that he may have chassidic roots in the
Ruzhin dynasty. We also know that he was a friend of the Israeli
national poet, Chaim Nachman Bialik, either >from childhood or >from his
Yeshiva in Zhitomir (all towns in the sqvira district before world war
I).

+ His wife Tzipora (Feiga) Baitszman (nee unknown) was also >from a
famous chassidic dynasty, we don't know her maiden name or which one.

+ Their daughter Zhenia Rabinovitz (nee Baitszman) was married to
Yuzek Rabinovitz, and they had a son Anatoly (Tolia) Rabinovitz. His
last known whereabouts were that he was running a factory in the USSR
during the 60s. If still alive, he should be in his 80s now.

+ their son Leonid (Tolia) Baitszman - He had a son and a daughter
(maybe named Alla or Ella), which don't know their whereabouts. If
still alive, they should be in their mid 70s to early 80s.

+ They had more kids, but we know their fate.

Any information on that town, online resources or other, will be welcomed.

My thanks to those kind respondents to the query I raised last week. With
the use of a more powerful magnifying glass (taking Robert Fraser's Sherlock
Holmes suggestion that bit further!), I have concluded that it is definitely
"Lib." and not "Lit." in the employer column and on that basis would like to
know how I might be able to obtain a list of libraries for
Whitechapel in 1891 and how I might go about researching workers employed by
them.
