JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

sue kay <kaysue2@...>
Hello All
My name is Sue Kay and I am currently living in London, England. I am interested in contact with any one who may have in their family lines ... or may have come across in thier research ... this spelling of the BERKEWICZ name. As we are trying to trace backwards >from our Mother in order to find certification regarding the family. We have a ' possible' inherited medical problem that the Health Service here in England wish to investigate further. So we are specifically interested in death certification so that we can look at the 'cause of death' section's of any family that we can deffinatly trace as being part of 'our' family. We know very little about her young life other than she was born in Poland with her little brother and lived with their grandparent's in a town / area that sounds in English like Olly, Oily, Olle etc. (This might be where she was born or it might be where her family and Grandparents lived / came from). Which we think maybe on the Polish border area / region with Germany however, we are not 100% about this? When our Mother was about 5,6,or 7 and her brother about 3,4 years old they moved to Hannover, Germany to join their parents who had moved their previously to find work and set up a home. Both children where born in the 1920's. Our Mother's name was Gerda Herta Anne BERKEWICZ. We have no birth certification (or any other except marriage and that just lists her as Foreign Born) for our now deceased Mother but have always understood that she was born about 1925 give or take a year or two. We understand that BERKEWICZ is a Jewish name ... with many variations in the spelling. However, we believe that her Christian belief's as a child where more in line with the Lithuanian Church ... possibly?? Out side of these few facts we know little of our Mother's life prior to her marriage to our Father and moving here to England to be with him. Would anybody know how we might best follow these snippets of information up or has anybody else come across this lady in their research? Many thanks all. Sue Kay, London, England.

In Need of Some Help Translating Yiddish
#general
elowith
All,
I need some help translating part of a book: Goldfaden-bukh (1926) (In English, The Book of Goldfaden) which is downloadable through Nat'l Yiddish Book Center (I can provide a link as well). Abraham GOLDFADEN, the subject of the book, was, I'm pretty sure, my great-granduncle, and I'm trying to get a definitive link between him and my great-grandfather, Samuel Goldfaden. I have almost no information on Samuel himself besides some US census records and an incomplete death certificate. Assuming this book supports my hypothesis, I'd also like any available information on their other two brothers. I presume that the information on Abraham's youth is near the front, but I can't read any Yiddish to state that for a fact. I am looking for any details regarding birth dates and places, family, etc. that could prove useful in my search. Posting the entire book in Viewmate doesn't seem very practical. I understand that this is a lot to ask of a volunteer, and I'd gladly pay someone conversant in Yiddish to help. Thanks, Joanne Goulding frelzna@... Interested in surnames: BRAUER (Germany), LEOPOLD (Alsace-Lorraine), BLOCH (Alsace-Lorraine), TUSKA (Hungary), Eisner (Hungary),GOLDFADEN(Russia/Ukraine), MESHORES/MESHARES(Lithuania), and BUKANSKY (Lithuania) researching MODERATOR NOTE: Please reply privately.

COHEN/DANZIGER

Clive Callman <callman@...>
I am seeking information about the life and details of Sol COHEN. He was
active in the Zionist or Reform Movement and associated with Rabbi Joachim Prinz before World War 2. He appears to have been the son of a sister of Carl CALLMANN born about 1833 in Briesen who died on 15 June 1919 in the U.S.A. His second brother was Dr. Salo CALLMANN born 2 June 1835 in Briesen who died 24 November 1888 in U.S.A. I have no details of the names or dates relating to the mother of Sol COHEN. Any information would be appreciated. Further I am seeking information about Ruth DANZIGER who married 8 October 1828 in Breslau Ernst MEYER, merchant >from Cologne, the son of Sigmund and Lonny Meyer. I believe they emigrated to the United States around 14 November 1935 under the names of Margot Ruth MEYER and Bernhard MEYER on the SS Washington. His Honour Judge Clive Callman callman@...

Re: Donating material to an archive

Jane Pearson <doumajk@...>
The Society of American Archivists has an online brochure about
donating your family papers to an archives. Many things will depend on the policies of the particular institution - what they accept, what limitations they will agree to (it's not much use for them to have the stuff if no one can use it!!), how much processing will be done (foldering, cataloging, etc. - often a matter of personnel and money). Some things you can specify and/or negotiate also. http://www.archivists.org/publications/donating-familyrecs.asp Jane Pearson - formerly an archivist, now working with genealogical manuscript collections in a library.

Searching: descendants of Shloime/Saul STERN, OB"M

srhlsr@...
I have already posted this message, years ago, in 1998.
I'm posting it again, in the hopes of success! My mother, Mickey SHORE's maiden name is STERN. Her father, Lazare/Eliezer Simcha Stern, a"h, was born in Goworowo, Poland. His parents were Yaakov and Tontse (nee KLEPFISZ) Stern, a"h. He had 2 sisters, one who married KOHEN, and perished during WW2; one who married BIRON, and moved to Israel. He had a number of brothers; Yitzchak Dovid Stern, a"h, born in Wyszkow, Poland, Shloima Stern, a"h, (it's been said that he changed Stern to Stein -not definite), Shmuel Stern, a"h, who died in Europe; I've heard that Shloima, a"h, had 2 children, a son Herbie (was a PHD in ? field) and daughter Esther(was a school teacher/professor(?)). I would like very much to find them and be in touch with them, however I don't know how to find them. There are a number of unknowns: where did Shloima, their father die; when; did he die as STERN or STEIN??? Relatives think Shloima did change STERN to STEIN; he did move to the USA, but nobody recalls when; we don't know if his children went under the surname STERN or changed it to STEIN. Do any of these names look familiar to JewishGenners? Does anybody have ideas on how to find Herbie or Esther, Shloima, a"h's children? (I have sent e-mails to many STERNs and so far have not been able to find any connections;) Please send replies to me at: srhlsr@... Thank you!! Sarah Lasry Israel

Update Surname Navigator Israel
#general
Rob Kuijsten© <robkuijstenANTISPAM@...>
Dear researchers
There has been a major update for the Surname Navigator, a simple one- button-form METAsearch engine for surnames and "cross-border" emigration research with the click of a button. Surname Navigator: Israel, facilitates the searching of multiple databases with one entry. http://www.geneaservice.nl/navigator/israel/ In addition, other sections of the site are applicable to other countries. There is a global version and separate versions for 45 countries. It's a good starting point to search for a name. Researchers can save many hours using METAsearch engines such as these. Some have reported excellent results. (Works with functional pop-ups) If you leave all the boxes checked, it will open 6 to 10 windows. If you want less windows, just uncheck the sites you don’t want to have searched. Databases included are LDS Israel, Geneanet Israel, Jewish Community England, Jewish passengers NY, 1892-1924, Dutch Holocaust Victims, Yad Vashem Names Database, The Poor Jews' Temporary Shelter Database, Michigan Jewish Cemetery Index, Jewish immigration documents.
