This is a remarkable and poignant resource. The different sections of =
the directory are in random order so one does need to download all of =
the pdfs and rearrange them or click on Read Online and browse. I was =
able to find listings for relatives in Debrecen, Kosice, and Nyiregyhaza =
among others. Note that place names are all in Hungarian and that the =
directory includes places in Slovakia, Romania, etc. that Hungary lost =
in the Treaty of Trianon but were ceded back by the First and Second =
Vienna Awards.

It is remarkable to see the names of so many Hungarian Jews, most of whom
probably perished less than a year >from the date the book was published. Zoltan
Vero, my second cousin's father, is among the Debrecen business people listed.
According to military records he lost his life on the Russian front in Jan
1943.

Dear Mr. Fuchs,

I tried to access the phone book you mentioned below. When I merely
clicked the link I got an error. When I copied the link into my browser
and added the /43/ on the following line I got an error. When I loaded
the /Internet Archive/ WEB site and searched for the phone book all I
got was a letter >from a magazine and 3 phone books for Pittsburgh 1936,
1946, 1951.

Could you please verify the link?

After you mentioned it, I tried, there are quite a lot of different Formats and
you have to open several of them, they are in some kind of disorder. Finally I
found the pages I was interested in. They were in the pdf Files, under tk17q55.pdf (telefonKonyv pages 17 - 55) this are the commubnities Baja - Budafok, on page 37 (21 in pdf) I found the shop of my Father. Thank to you Shalom. I downloaded this part of the Phonebook.

Goleszow (Goleschau)- Cement Factory Near Auschwitz #general

esjoachim@...

My cousin, Pierre (nee Ephraim in France) CHANOVER, a hidden child Holocaust
survivor, told me just yesterday, that he had learned his father, Shlomo
Yankel nee CHRZANOWER (k/a Jacques in France), did not die immediately upon
his deportation to Auschwitz on Convoy #5 >from Beaune la Ronde, France on
June 28, 1942.

Shlomo Yankel CHRZANOWER apparently was sent to work in the Portland Cement
Factory in or near Goleszow, Poland (Goleschau in German). We cannot
determine for how long Shlomo Yankel worked in Goleszow before his death in
Auschwitz.

Pierre would like to learn his father's actual date of death in order to
properly memorialize his father's death by saying Kadish. Pierre was 9 years
old the last time he saw his father, 68 years ago.

A Google search of Goleszow provides some basic historical information but
no specific documentation of workers as far as I could tell.

Thanks for any help, information and insights,

Sources for Information on Family Before and During the Shoah #general

Sabena Stark wrote asking for information on archives containing
Shoah survivior's oral testimony other than Yad Vashem.

The Holocaust Media Project, founded in 1983 by the late Lani Silver
and my life partner, R. Ruth Linden, Ph.D, was the predecessor of the
Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project (BAHOHP) in San Francisco.
Beginning in 1981, oral histories of survivors >from around the world
were recorded at various locations including at an American Gathering
of Jewish Holocaust Survivors in the early '80's. Silver and Linden
later consulted with Stephen Spielberg in 1994 when he founded his
Holocaust oral history project, The Shoah Foundation.

BAHOHP retained a recording of each interview and sent a copy to the
United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Each interviewee
also received a copy of their interview. BAHOHP then merged with the
Holocaust Center of Northern California (HCNC. http://www.hcnc.org/.

R. Ruth Linden, Ph.D. donated copies of the original Holocaust Media
Project archives (1981-1984) to Yad Vashem in September, 2007 through
the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco. I do not know whether these
copies have been catalogued by Yad Vashem and made available to the
public yet, however.

Since you know a U.S. City to look for, another good resource is searching
City Directories. Not many are online yet, but those that are really help
fill in family stories. This is a link to one location including 1897-1898.
