Re: Looking for info on Markus (b1904) and/or Jonas (b1909) SCHEINBACH #general

Philip was looking for info on Markus (b1904) and/or Jonas (b1909)
SCHEINBACH. I found the naturalization papers for Markus who became Max and
the spelling of the surname changed to SCHOENBACH. One of his witnesses was
his brother, Jonas. In the process, I also discovered an older brother Harry.

I encourage all of you to use the search functions which allow the user to
omit parts of names. I used SCH*NB*C* for my search. To me, this is much
easier than wading through all the "sounds-like" options!

The computer at the largest gen site (A.com) must have an auto-fill function
at times, because some of the entries for Austria say Australia, and vice versa!

My all time favorite is the grandmother who came >from Kalnas but I could not

I want to thank each and all of you for a very spirited
discussion on the "decalogiste" occupation. I think
the last couple of replies were the best summary of
what this person probably did/was.

A "scribe of holy scripture" is what I have entered in
my genealogical data base (the English part) next
to "decalogiste" (the French part).

With my best wishes for 2011

National Archives (USA) opens Online Public Access Prototype to Public #general

Jan Meisels Allen

According to NARAtions, the blog of the National Archives and Records
Administration [NARA] (USA) http://blogs.archives.gov/online-public-access/,
their new Online Public Access prototype is now available to the public.
http://www.archives.gov/research/search/

NARA is asking the public to try it out and send in your comments and
feedback to search@nara.gov .

The Online Public Access [OPA] resource is the online public portal to
NARA's records and information about their records. The OPA prototype
currently provides access to nearly one million electronic records currently
in the Electronic Records Archives (ERA), which are not available elsewhere
online. More electronic records >from ERA will be included in OPA in the
coming year. OP will eventually replace the Access to Archival Databases
System (AAD)- but not within the next two years.

To read which AAD database series are currently searchable on OPA, and how
to enter a search, and view the results see:

Re: Galician burial society in NY, Cong Adas Israel... #general

Marc DVer <mdver@...>

I suspect the difference is insignificant. I don't think there were
many, if any, Sephardim in Galacia at the time. Those who were would
most likely have been transient Sephardic businessmen. Most likely the
name refers to the Minhag of Nusach Sephard, referring mostly to the
Nusach, and perhaps indicating that this was a Chassidic rite shul.

The answer is yes: thanks to Footnote, I discovered some naturalization
documentation for my great Uncle Samuel Maltinsky who arrived in the US
under the name of Solomon Maltinsky, probably in the year 1884.

from Stephen Silberman: Does anyone else know of a Solomon being turned into

My Wife's Great Uncle Simon Winston's name was Schmiel Weinstein in the 1901
English Census. In the 1911 Census he was Samuel Weinstein. After the 1911
Census he was Solomon, the same as his father. When he changed his name to
Winston, he became Simon.

My grandfather was always known to us as "Samuel Saul" once in the US.

I found his name on the 1908 passenger manifest as Solomon. He was 11 years
old at the time. So the answer is that yes, this name switch certainly
could, and did, occur. I'm sure there are many more examples.

I'd be curious to know if anyone would know more about the relationship of
these three names and why one would have adopted one over the other. I
realize the biblical connection between Samuel and Saul, but wonder why one
might abandon Solomon in favor of Samuel. Perhaps "Sam" was more fashionable
at that time in the US.

Unfortunately we never got to ask my grandfather, nor have we yet found his
birth record in Galicia to see what name he was originally given.
