JRI-Poland's role in Gwyneth Paltrow episode of "Who Do You think You Are? #poland

Stanley Diamond

Dear friends of JRI-Poland.

When you watch Actress Gwyneth Paltrow's ancestral search,
which will be told April 1st in a new episode of NBC's
"Who Do You Think You Are?", keep in mind that it might not
have happened at all if it hadn't been for for Jewish Records
Indexing - Poland. www.jri-poland.org

The coming episode of the documentary series features
Academy Award-winner Paltrow, the U.S. born daughter of
producer Bruce Paltrow ("St. Elsewhere," "The White Shadow").
Her roots go back to a long line of rabbis named Paltrowicz
from northeastern Poland and the towns of Suwalki, Lomza
and nearby shtetls.

The show's researchers were able to tap into JRI-Poland's
online database as the starting point in documenting Paltrow's
ancestry. The JRI-Poland database has 90 record entries for
Paltrow's ancestors and the "Who Do You Think You Are? research
team said:

"JRI Poland is a wonderful resource for anyone
researching Jewish Polish ancestry and was invaluable
during the research for the Gwyneth Paltrow episode."

Founded in 1995, JRI-Poland has a global board, hundreds
of volunteers serving thousands of researchers, funded by
groups and genealogists around the world.

JRI-Poland is creating searchable on-line indices of Jewish
records >from current and former territories of Poland.

The searchable database has indices to 4.2 million records
from more than 550 towns, with thousands added every few
months, vital records and censuses >from the Polish State
Archives and other sources both inside and outside of Poland.
The database also includes army draft lists, cemetery burial
indices, ghetto death records, birth, marriage and death
announcements in newspapers in Poland, and more.

I know I had family >from this area, and some would have been born at

because there are no surnames. The links are

Searching artist William Gopper's "aunt " Rachel who perished in the Triangle Fire #general

Susan Viuker Lieberman <viukerville11@...>

My cousin is related to William Gropper. In Louis Lozowick's book William
Gropper there is a mention of Aunt Rachel, much beloved by the Gropper
children who died in the Triangle Fire.

We are interested in learning more about her. On the list of victims there
is a Rachel Gross but we do not know if that is her or if she is one of the
many woman named Rose, perhaps a more American name.

Thank you.

Re: Bavarian research #general

Ralph Bloch <rablo07@...>

Further to Carol Jaffe's inquiry regarding her Bavarian gggrandmother
Babette Lazarus:

I have searched the civil records of Bavarian Swabia (jgbs.org) and the
matrikel lists of Lower and Middle Franconia (Bavarian regions). In Swabia
the name 'Lazarus' occurs only sporadically:
A Jachet Lazarus died 1809 at age 74 in Harburg.
A Hendle Loeb nee Lazarus bore two children in Horben (1830 and 1831);
And a Sandel (Alexander) Lazarus died 1806 in Wallerstein.
Furthermore, a 'Dolz Lazarus' died in Wallerstein in 1832. However, it
says "widow of Lazarus". So we don't know if this was her husbands first name
before the introduction of family names.
Neither in Middle nor Lower Franconia des the family name 'Lazarus'
appear at all.

So, while I couldn't help you in finding your gggrandmother, you now
know at least, where not to search further.

New York street videos #general

Phyllis Kramer

So often I find folks asking about street addresses on the lower east
side, where many of our immigrant ancestors lived. I just came across this
fabulous site; just put in the address and you will see the street view.
Very simple to use.

I am assuming the videos were taken in the late 2000s..... it says they are
sourced >from Google street views.

Use vPike to acquaint yourself with an area before you go there or you
can call up places >from your past to see what they look like now.

happy hunting!
