Searching VOIKHANSKY/VAIKHANSKY from Vitebsk to Canada 1937 #belarus

prvs=01729aa518=prvs=1172cda020=dvi@...

Shalom,

I try to trace my relatives >from Vitebsk who immigrated to Canada in 1937
(or up till 1940).

Sara and her sister left their parents home in Vitebsk in the year 1937 and
immigrated to Canada.
My great grandfather was Haiim Ber VOIKHANSKY (or VAIKHANSKY).
My grand father was Yeruchim Voikhansky and His wife was Stera Kreslavsky
the daughter of Izik Yankel Kreslavsky. They lived in the second Slobodskay
lane number -11 in Vitebsk before the war. My grandfather Yeruchim
Voikhansky was born in - 1874 in Gorodok. His father was Haiim Ber
Voikhansky and they were tanners and had a tannery in Vitebsk and in Riga
Latvia.
In the same house lived Simion Haimovich the brother of Yeruchim (my grand
father) with his wife Bella Abramovna and 2 children Yeruchim and Shifra,
His sister the widow Lana Shapiro with 2 children 11 years old and 12 years
old (in 1923), and 2 twin sisters Rosa and Basia Vaikhansky that were born
in 1892 and may be more sons and daughters of Haiim Ber Voikhansky lived in
this house.

I do not know if Sara and her sister were daughters of Haiim Voikhansky or
may be his granddaughters. May be they were the daughters of the widow Lana
Shapiro?

I have heard some information >from a family member, Larissa Afanasieva
Vaikhansky who escaped during the second war to Samara in Russia and still
live there up till today:

The sisters were forced by their brother / uncle Semion Vaikhansky to join
the communist party and therefore they escaped to Canada.

They got married in Canada and have descendents there.

That all I know about them,

Thanks for any help,

Dror Vaikhansky

Film Project Galicia/Ukraine #poland

Pamela Weisberger

Renaud Lavergne, a journalist based in Marseilles with Agence
France-Presse, is continuing his work on a documentary for
"Envoye Special," a highly regarded French news program, focusing
on Jews returning to Eastern Europe to visit their ancestral shtetls.

He is hoping to film and interview researchers who will be
traveling to "Galician," Ukraine on such a trip between the dates
August 21 - 27. While the film crew's base of operations will be
Lviv, they should be able to travel to the towns these researchers
are visiting, but the dates are pretty much set in stone, so you
must be traveling during that time give or take a few days.

If you are interested in participating -- or know someone who
might be -- and want more information on this film project,
please contact me privately and I will forward your query to
Monsieur Lavergne.

Kovno Gymnasium Yizkor Book Volunteer Translators Sought #lithuania

Susan Goldsmith

Dear Chaverim,

I have come into possession of the Kovno Gymnasium Yizkor Book,
(Kaunas, Lithuania), which I believe is written in Hebrew, although
like other Yizkor Books, it could be a combination of Hebrew and
Yiddish. Individuals mentioned in the book came to teach and study
at the Gymnasium >from all over Lithuania.

Are there volunteers who would be willing to help translate the
book into English? It is about 340 pages with many photos. I am
already heading up the translation of the Jonava Yizkor Book and
know how difficult it is to raise funds to pay a translator. That
is why I am seeking volunteers for this project.

I am hoping that some talented landsleyt will step forward to
translate the Kovno Gymnasium Yizkor Book. Your efforts will be
recognized when we submit the translation to the JewishGen Yizkor
Project. Your families, colleagues and other researchers will know
of your contribution and be forever grateful.

I am hoping that >from the translation, we may be in a position
to submit Pages of Testimony to Yad Vashem for individuals not yet
entered into their database of remembrance.

Please contact me privately if you can help in this effort and
indicate whether you know both Hebrew and Yiddish or one or the other.

Best Regards,
Susan Goldsmith
