INTRO - Researching SCHWARZ family from Limburg-Weilburg district #germany

Anne K <annekoss@...>

Hello GerSig,

I've just joined the group. I have been doing geneaology research for
the past 18 months. I consider myself to be an intermediate in doing
German Jewish Geneaology research. I live in Toronto, Canada. My native
language is English, and I can read and understand German.

I consider myself to be advanced in using a computer. My experience in using
the Internet is extensive.

I have identified the names of my father's grandparents, Ferdinand and Johanna
SCHWARZ (nee HESS). My father's father, Adolf SCHWARZ, and his 7 siblings
were born in Heckholzhausen, Beselich, in the Limburg-Weilburg district.

My primary research goals now are to find out what happened to four
of my grandfather's siblings, about whom I have not been able to find
any information, other than their place of birth and dates of birth.

The family names and ancestral towns are:
SCHWARZ, ERICH, b. Sept. 2, 1877 - Heckholzhausen, Beselich,
Limburg-Weilburg District
SCHWARZ, Frieda b. Sept. 8, 1878 - Heckholzhausen
SCHWARZ, Helena b. Nov. 24, 1880 - Heckholzhausen
SCHWARZ, Julius b. March 6, 1880 - Heckholzhausen

I would appreciate any information. Many thanks,

Anne Kossowsky, annekoss@yahoo.com Toronto, Canada JGID 452398

Re: NATHAN family at Mannheim #germany

Micheline GUTMANN

In order to answer to Steven Leof who searches a NATHAN family from
Ilversheim,
The list of Mannheim fixation of names contains a NATHAN family but I don't
see any Joseph.

The chief of the family is a Lazarus NATHAN born in 1765, his wife Clara in
1771 with 8 children born between 1793 and 1809.

Although (due to the city in the south of Spain with the same name) I cannot
locate the records of my grandfather, Israel Bailen, other than the ship's
manifest .. which based on the age, source of embarkation .. I believe is
that of my grandfather. Can you offer suggestions as to how I may proceed?
I would appreciate this.

Why do places in Eastern Europe (Galicia, Bailen, etc.) have the same names as places in Spain? #latvia

Paul Silbert <msilbert@...>

I did not mean to suggest that no Eastern European Jews came >from a
Sephardic background. One family, the Trapidos, in my family's home
town of Pandelys, were >from Spain via Holland and had documentary
evidence to prove it. I was merely stating the obvious: that when it
comes to tracing the ancestry of Eastern European Jewry, the more
far-fetched theories of Sephardi migrations and Khazar conversions have
less factual evidence (not to mention logic) to back them up than the
well-attested movement of German Jews into Eastern Europe, which
paralleled, by the way, the Drive to the East of their Christian
countrymen.

Yiddish names of KUJAWSKI ancestors in Lodz, Poland #general

Naidia Woolf <rnwoolf@...>

I just reviewed the Holocaust testimonial of my late cousin, Martin WINTER
(otherwise known as KUJAWSKI). This was a two-hour video interview conducted
circa 1993.

On the screen were the names of what were referred to as Martin's "biological
family": these included Esther, Fevia, Hanka, and Renau (presumably spelled
phonetically, based on what Martin told the interviewer). Because they were not the
names of Martin's siblings I'm assuming they were of an older generation.

I just did a search for Fevia, Hanka, and Renau KUJAWSKI in the JRI-Poland database
for Lodz, Poland using the "Sounds like" feature. My search was unsuccessful,
possibly because they weren't their officially recorded (that is, if registered)
names but rather those used within the family circle (nicknames).

Can anyone tell me what the formal (secular and/or Hebrew) versions of those names
might be?

Looking for suggestions to locate records in the U.S. #ukraine

Sandy Crystall

JewishGenners -

I am trying to locate information (U.S. census or otherwise) on a
person who at least represented himself as a brother of a great uncle
of mine.

Several years ago I located a 1905 Ellis Island manifest for Eliukin
Pasternak, age 16, who sailed on the Noordam and arrived in NY on 27
Dec 1905. He was a tailor >from the same town as my maternal
grandmother and grandfather (Belozerka, spelled "Bialozurka") and he
was going to his brother Joe (my great uncle) (in care of someone
else) at 391 Grand Street in New York, where other known relatives
lived in the 1904-1905 timeframe.

He is unknown to other family members, and given his first name, I am
not sure what he may have become known as, so thus far my search for
additional information has been unsuccessful. I know the
possibilities are infinite (one of Joe's sisters indicated her surname
was "Pester"). Most of my relatives settled in the New York City
area, although I have not limited my search to that area.

Any suggestions for locating this person would be wonderful... Thank you!

Best regards,

Sandy Crystall

Pieter - thank you for your response to my query about this disease, it
certainly sounds a particularly nasty and life-threatening illness.
Despite growing up in a medical family I had never heard of before I
listened to my grandmother's stories and when I saw it again in Bernard
Valman's article I thought it worth posting a question about it. I have
had some interesting responses >from several people who, like, you have
been unfortunate to have contracted it in recent times.
