Rabka - Jewish district #general

Michal Rapta <panrapta@...>

Hello,

My name is Michal Rapta. I am >from Rabka. I am fourth-year student
and I am interested in history of Rabka. Together with my friends
we are trying to save >from oblivion the history of our city.
Together we create a website, where we present the historical articles
(link: http://historiarabki.blog.pl/).

We also published a book about the Holocaust in our city, entitled
"Mroczne sekrety willi Tereska" ("Dark Secrets of the Tereska Villa";
Tereska is a name of a building in Rabka where Sipo-SD School was located).
The book is available in its entirety on the Internet:
http://books.google.pl/books?id=v4fuS9igVIEC&printsec=frontcover&dq=mroczne+sekrety+willi+tereska&hl=pl&sa=X&ei=etcGT_PRI8z3sga4yuWDDw&ved=0CD8Q6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q&f=false
[or http://tinyurl.com/Rabka-Holocaust --Mod.]

The next our book about the history of Rabka is being completed.
It will be published in this year.

During our research we learned that in Rabka before World War II there
was a synagogue. We decided to check this information. It turned out
that the area in which there was a synagogue, were called before war
the Jewish district. We learned, among other things where was rabbi's
house, mikvah, kosher slaughterhouse, but we could not find a
synagogue. It turned out that barely visible, covered with soil stairs
used to led to the synagogue. The synagogue was demolished by the
orders of the occupier. After the war, the stairs were covered with
soil by the people building homes in the area. Everyone forgot about
the history of this place. We decided to somehow restore the memory of
the area. We started searching for people who remember the area's
residents. Unfortunately, no one was able to give us any details.
The war took with it the people who lived here and with them the
memory of this place.

We would like to commemorate this place a memorial plaque.
But first we would like to know the history of this place.
We do not know who was a rabbi in Rabka, when the synagogue was
founded. How it looked like? Questions are many.

So far, we have done very diligent work, and we are motivated to
continue it. In our spare time we were tidying the area and removed
the ground >from the stairs. Here are pictures of effects of our work:
https://picasaweb.google.com/historiarabki/RabkaGilowka?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCJ_NxdGwyc_ALg&feat=directlink
[or http://tinyurl.com/Rabka-pictures --Mod.]

Our motivation is simple; we would like to expand our knowledge, and
also document historical incidents for the next generations.

We are looking for people who could have information about this
district in Rabka. We would be very grateful for any information.

Faithfully yours,

Michal Rapta

Looking for descendants of Otto and Bessie REINFELD - USA #general

Nicolas Trokiner

Dear all,

I am looking for the descendants of Otto and Bessie REINFELD nee
Trakiner. They were born at the end of the 1880's and married in NY in
1907. I found out on different census that they had at least 4 children:
Frieda, Nathan, Harold and Sidney. According to the social security
death index, Harold and Sidney passed away in Florida in the 90s.

The other clue I can give is that many members of this Reinfeld family
are buried in "South Grove Ave." cemetery in Newark, NJ (I found their
tombstones pictures on www.jewishdata.com, and the vegetation clearly
shows they are next to another.)

Any information about eventual descendant would be greatly appreciated.

Please answer privately.

Kind regards
Nicolas Trokiner

Dear all,

On www.jewishdata.com, there is a picture for Bessie Reinfeld's
tombstone but the angle doe not allow to read the Hebrew inscription

I would really appreciate if someone visiting this cemetery (which I
cannot identify better than "South Grove Ave." cemetery) could take a
picture and send it to me.

She passed away in 1950. I have no idea of the tombstone location.

Please answer privately.

Kind regards,

Return of Nazi-era confiscated books to rightful owners #general

Judith Elam

Between 1933 and 1945 German Jews sold books and other assets in order just
to survive. They were also required to relinquish their assets prior to
emigration. In addition, books were seized by the Nazis. These assets
are commonly referred to as "confiscated assets".

The Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin is in possession of confiscated
books. The Landesbibliothek wants to return these books to the rightful
owners, or their heirs.

Below is a link to a list of the original owners and the contact
information for the Landesbibliothek.

I recommend a wonderful Polish film called "Austeria" made in 1982.
Director Jerzy Kawalerowicz, it is about a Jewish inn on the
Austrian-Russian border on the first day of World War I.
The video blurb says,
"On the first day of World War I, a group of Jews flee >from the Cossack
army in Polish Galicia and finds itself trapped overnight in a border
inn. Relationships develop, love affairs are snatched, the religious pray."
The groups include a band of actors, students >from a Yeshiva with rebbe,
and other individuals, all Jews.

"I would appreciate any comments about the fact there there were so
many tavern keepers..."

My SHENKMAN family were tavern keepers in Volyntsy, Vitebsk gubernia,
now Belarus, near the border of Dvinsk, Lithuania. My grandmother
talked about how non-Jews would frequent the tavern, get drunk and
dance all night in the tavern. Whether it was a bed and breakfast as
Howard Margol has suggested of taverns in Lithuania, I do not know. I
can, however, attest to antisemitism against the tavern keepers. A few
years ago, Yuri Dorn sent me a famous Byelorussian "fairytale" about
Jewish tavern keepers, "Lantuch v shenke" (Ghost in the Tavern). This
antisemitic tale, by coincidence just happens to be about the tavern
keeper in Volyntsy, Vitebsk guberniya, my SHENKMAN family. The tale
centers around a ghost that inhabits a tavern and causes such havoc
that the tavern keeper is forced to turn over his business to a
Byelorussian. Lo and behold, once the Jewish entrepreneur is gone, the
ghost departs. As with every endeavor our ancestors were involved in,
antisemitism was never far >from the door. By the way, the surname
SHENKMAN is Yiddish for tavern owner.

My grandfather and great grandfather were Tavern and Restaurant owners in
Lviv during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As Jews they were not
allowed to have their own licence to sell liquor and needed to pay a
Christian to use his licence to sell liquor. I am not sure if this also covered
the mixture they made in the basement.
