I've found the 1902 birth record of my maternal ggm Gizella Fein (nee
Rosler/Rozsler), excerpted >from the Hungarian Civil Records (for Budapest
VIII kerulet) on Family Search.

We're completely perplexed; not only were we unaware that perhaps my ggm
was illegitimate, but her mother's name on the birth record differs from
that of my ggm's marriage records (and my gggm's death record); that is, Netti
Izsak nee Rozsler.

would like people who have roots there to submit material for the website.
You can submit photos of the town, photos of people born in the town, family

JRI-Poland introduces new tool to graphically follow families in the records of Poland #general

Stanley Diamond

Jewish Records Indexing - Poland today announced the "Surname
Distribution Mapper" - a tool designed to help genealogy
researchers graphically understand where their family names first
appeared in the 19th century records and visualize how the family
spread throughout Poland by decades >from the early 1800s into the
first part of the 20th century.

Using modern mapping technology provided by Google Maps, the
Surname Distribution Mapper allows users to graphically display
their search results using a tree icon to indicate the number of
entries found for a surname in a town's vital and other records.

By running the cursor over each tree icon, a user can view a
popup window displaying the number of vital record entries found
in various towns in the JRI-Poland database. Clicking on the
balloon brings the user to the familiar JRI-Poland search results
for detailed viewing of a town's entries.

Additionally, and especially exciting for researchers, the
Surname Distribution Mapper can display results for specific
decades or in a "progressive mode," where tree icons appear
successively by decade to give the researcher an idea of the
movement of their family around Poland and the Western Ukraine.

"The Surname Distribution Mapper enables a researcher to
experience visually much of what we had only been able to do
conceptually," explained Robinn Magid, Lublin Archives Project
Coordinator and long-time JRI-Poland board member. "Our goal is
to quickly determine where a person should focus their research
energy to obtain results beyond what the family's oral history
might recollect."

"JRI-Poland database manager Michael Tobias has given us the gift
of highlighting migration patterns and spotlighting probable
'home bases' for families. The Surname mapper takes genealogy
search results to a new level," she said.

The JRI-Poland Surname Distribution Mapper is now live and can be
initiated >from the "search database" link on the JRI-Poland Home
Page at www.jri-poland.org .

Re: Do you ever leave someone off your tree? #general

Debby Gincig Painter

I agree that we are products of our family no matter the circumstances of these
relationships. There will always be people or situations that families are not
too proud of "acknowledging" but they are family nevertheless. For example, my
extended family trees include a sprinkling of mobsters, criminals, and very public
scandals. In addition, one family member had a child at a young age and her
daughter was placed for adoption. This was "not talked about" and those of us
of the younger generation knew nothing about it. A few years ago, they reconnected
and and she and her family are now included in family functions. We felt it
would have been wrong to leave them off the family tree and I have the "marital"
relationship listed as "other" with no other details. And finally, in the matter
of someone not wanted to be included on the trees,I simply indicate them as "Son"
married "Daughter" with the last names. That way in the future someone will know
there was another child in the family and, in the present, everyone is satisfied.
And as always, living persons' birth or marriage information is always listed as
private or unknown on my public website pages.

Researching a family business? #general

A. E. Jordan

Anyone have any experience / tips on researching the history of a family
business?

The business I am looking for was set up in the 1920s in Brooklyn, New York
and remained in the family's hands for 70 years. It actually still
functions but in the 1990s was sold out to a big corporation. The family tells
me any records were long since lost / destroyed at their level so I am
trying to look for public records for them.

I am especially looking for details on the family ownership in the first
generation. I got the incorporation papers >from the New York State
Department of State which keeps this kind of thing and they were not helpful.
Actually a giant yawn I think.

I tried researching the business at the local courthouse where the records
are kept -- in this case in Brooklyn. Nothing showed up there and that's
what led me to the state level.

Not sure what else I should be trying to see if there are any public
details on the ownership of a family business.

I assume the tax records are not public and even if they are I don't know
if they would shed any light on the division of the family's ownership in
the business.

I have searched the local newspapers and found some advertisements about
the business. Not much else.

One of the family members went bankrupt around the time the business got
going. Not sure if it would be worth trying to retrieve those records, if
they even still exist 80 years later.

Curious if anyone else has any experience/tips in trying to research a
family business.

Thanks
