Translation assistance from Latvian to English please #latvia

Jacquie Gruszecki <yehudit5@...>

Hello fellow Genners:

I am researching my paternal family name Iuzis, Iusis, Jusis.

I googled the names and a page came up on my screen
with content which includes 'Juzi', 'Juzis' & 'Juzim'.

I do not know what it is about. It appears to be in Latvian.

I would greatly appreciate your assistance with a loose translation to find out if it relates to my
family name.

It is on ViewMate at the following address:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=3D22827

This posting has been sent to both Latvia digest and JewishGen digest. Please reply
off list to my email address in private.

Wishing you all the very best of success in your research,

Re: re Who do you think you are, Rashida Jones. #latvia

Like several others who have written in, I enjoyed seeing the Rashida Jones
story. The Hasenpoth connection can in fact be traced quite easily via one of
the first lists posted on the Courland Research Group web site about twelve
years ago, namely the 1833-4 Hasenpoth Oklad. This is a browsable list of names
of about 1000 males of all ages, along with scanned copies of the original pages, at

http://www.jewishgen.org/courland/hasenpoth.htm

The list includes the following Bensonns, some of whom were mentioned in the
program (ages shown in parentheses) -- presumably Benjamin Markus, four sons and
a grandson:

107 BENSONN Benjamin Markus (47)
108 BENSONN Schlaume Benjamin (25)
109 BENSONN Markus Schlaume (1/2)
110 BENSONN Jankel Benjamin (16)
111 BENSONN Abraham Benjamin (9)
112 BENSONN Isaak Benjamin (1/2)

This list is also indexed in the All-Latvia Database, and Bensons are further
traceable via other records in the Database; for example, Isaak Benjamin (112
above) was apparently a 61-year old shoemaker in Talsen at the time of the 1897
All-Russia census.

Imagine I'm not the only one getting email solicitation for this website, which
primarily claims access to a gazillion old obits. If anyone familiar with it, is this
just another site that ancestry.com is really behind? Has anyone used, and if so, how
useful (index, completeness, etc.). I'm always dubious, but figure I'd ask...

Birth place identification request, on Viewmate #general

Lisa Dashman <lisa.dashman@...>

Dear Genners,
I've posted a portion of the manifest for my ggm Scheine Krinsky (nee Shvedsky),
who arrived with her two youngest children in New York on the S.S. Lusitania on 21
August 1908. The family lived in Vasilishki (now in Belarus). On the far right is
my ggm's birth place, which appears to be "Oeoitwo". It is on ViewMate at

your help in identifying this town.

Thank you for your help!

I do not have much information but can say the following. Pilot Officer Harold
Rosofsky was educated privately at King Edward VII School, Johannesburg, South
Africa, where he was also a member of the school's Cadet Corps. His death is
recorded in the school's Roll of Honour and also in its 'Old Edwardians Year Book'.
Apparently, three years before his death he volunteered for the Royal Air Force,
coming to the UK to train as a pilot. After training, he was confirmed by the Air
Ministry, as a Pilot Officer on 9th August 1937. On 25th September 1939, an article
appeared in 'The Star' of Johannesburg, with the headline "First South African
Killed in War is a Jew", the article went on to say "The Union learned today that
its first war victim was Harold Rosofsky, Jewish air pilot who was killed in action
on the western front. Rosofsky was a resident of Johannesburg. He went to England
three years ago and was given a commission in the Royal Air Face". His death is
also noted in the American Jewish Year Book 5700, on page 331. This stated the
following "The first South African Jew to fall in the conflict was Harold Rosofsky
of Johannesburg who met his death in a Royal Air Force engagement on September 24."
Finally, 'The Star' Johannesburg 8th September 1944, in its Roll of Honour for that
day stated "ROSOFSKY. - Pilot Officer Harold ROSOFSKY, killed in action 8th Sept.,
1939. Remembered by his sisters and brothers."
