Searching ABELOVE emigration information #general

Jay Gilbert

I have been unsuccessful in finding ship manifest arrival information for
two members of ABELOVE families who lived in Schenectady and Utica, in
upstate New York, and I am seeking suggestions or recommendations for
finding them. I believe they originally came >from what is now Lithuania,
but I am not certain of this. In the 1920 US Federal Census, Joseph ABELOVE
(born abt. 1891) states that he arrived in the US in 1906. In the 1930 US
Federal Census Barney ABELOVE (born abt. 1881) states that he arrived in the
US in 1892. I have searched in both Ancestry and the Ellis Island websites
for New York arrivals, and I have tried a number of spelling variations for
ABELOVE, but I have not been able to find their names. I have no guarantee
that they came through New York, but I have been presuming that to be the
most plausible entry point. The 1920 Census states that Joseph was
naturalized in 1915, and the 1930 Census has Barney as a naturalized
citizen, so I know I can try to get copies of their naturalization records
which would probably give me the name of the ship they arrived on. But I
would appreciate any search suggestions that might shorten this process.

Thank you.

SZMUKLER from Wislica and Stopnica, Poland #general

Ann Linder

Is anyone researching Lejbus SZMUKLER >from Wislica and Stopnica? His
parents were Zelman Icek Szmukler and Hinda Fajgla Lewkowicz. I have
his wife's name and his siblings' names should the name SZMUKLER be
significant to you. I do not know anything more about the SZMUKLER
family but I am interested to learn more so that I can connect the
branches on my KAMIENIARZ tree. (I have consulted JGFF.)

Information on Cousins in Bronx Orphanages: 1940 #general

Meron Lavie

With the availability of the index for the 1940 census, I finally managed to
locate 2 long lost 2nd cousins whose existence had only been "rumored". So
now I know where they were in 1940.

One was born in 1935, and was at the Shield of David Home for Orphan Girls
(Bronx).
Her sister was born in 1938, and was at the Home for Hebrew Infants (Bronx).

This is the first time I've had to deal with searching for relatives who
were in an orphanage or put up for adoption.

My questions:
1. What kinds of records are available?
2. Do I have any chance of getting their records either at the orphanages,
or their official adoption records?
3. The 5 year old, if not already adopted, would have entered first grade
the following year. Is there any way of knowing where she studied and get
any records >from that school?
4. Is there any registry of adopted children looking for their birth
families?
5. Are there any other tips that my fellow JewishGenners have to offer?
As stated, this is the first time I've ever searched for biological
records who were (presumably) adopted.

TIA fo any help
