JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Parka - Woman's Name #general

I had a gg-grandmother named Parka. I have never heard of that name before. She was
from Buchach, Galicia. All her siblings (and there were plenty of them!) had
"normal" Jewish names (Hebrew or Yiddish).

Has anyone ever heard of that name before? I know her non-Jewish name was
Josephine.

Katherina as a Jewish First Name in Russia #general

I had a gg-grandmother named Katherina, >from Russia or Podolia I believe. I know
that she was orthodox.

It was always my understanding that Katherina was not a name used by Jews.

Has anyone ever run into this name before for a woman in 19th century Russia?

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Synagogue plans 1856 #general

On the recent occasion of celebrating Rabbi Allan Smith's 40 years of leadership
at Congregation Beth Israel in Honesdale. Pennsylvania, I did some research
reading through the congregation minutes >from 1849-1900. In the minutes they
mention that the building plans were drawn up by "Sengvin". I see no other mention
of that name as being a member of the congregation.

A few years ago the Philadelphia Inquirer did an article about a very old synagogue
that is no longer in use in south-central New Jersey and it looked like a duplicate
of the one in Honesdale. Does anyone know anything about this "Sengvin". person?
Were there plans drawn up as standards for Jewish congregations?

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen for New Yorkers - Ancestry has free access to New York records #general

Joan Parker <joanparker@...>

New York Researchers
One thing Ancestry.com did was arrange for the NY census surnames to be done
figuring that so many genners have families arriving/living in NY. and it's free,
none of this two-week trial. Not only that but you can access an 1892 census which
is a great fill-in for the 1890 census lost in a fire.

http://www.ancestry.com/cs/us/newyork?o_iid=40092&o_lid=40092&o_sch=Web+Property

On the right-hand side of the screen is a free offer to access other NY goodies.
Using the 1892 census I delightedly found what I believe is my mgf David Goldberg
along with a bunch of siblings whose names I never knew let alone their existence.
Enough data matches that will prompt me to delve further. I have no business or
financial connection with Ancestry.com.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Massachusetts Vital Records (1907 or so) #general

Jonathan Malamy

Greetings,

My family search began in NYC and I have learned my way around vital records and
the municipal archives at 31 Chambers. But one branch of my family settled and
spent years in Boston. Through familysearch.org I linked to some birth lists but I
am wondering if their are individual birth certificats for Boston/Mass as there are
in NY. And marriage and death too, for that matter. And if so, how do you get
access to them?

Thanks for any advice,
Jonathan Malamy

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Jedwabne: seeking photographs #general

Ron Arons

I don't know if this will help, but I typed 'Jedwabne' into images.google.com and
found a postcard with an illustration of the old synagogue here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/9679871@N04/905314799/

The same exercise produced this modern day photo of an old school in the
town:

http://www.wilmatheater.org/blog/visit-jedwabne

as well as this photo (when it was taken is unclear):
