"Thomas Books Victims of Holodomor 1932-1933 in Ukraine" #ukraine

Marilyn Robinson

On the Ukrainian site, The Official Website of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, at: http://www.memory.gov.ua/ua/publication/content/1090.htm (http://tinyurl.com/9cw25zn), there are 19 downloadable books available about victims of the Ukraine famine. The volumes are listed and available by region (Kiev is by region and city). The first on the roster is identified as "Consolidated". Although I can't read Ukrainian, it appears that some if not all of the books contain lists of names and other pertinent information about the individuals as well as original documents and eyewitness accounts.

I promise this is my last post regarding my initial request for help with
this name! I told people when and if I was ever able to confirm or negate
their suggestions that the name might be Yitzhak, I would them know. This
evening I received an email >from my cousin, and yes, she remembers that her
grandfather did indeed have a brother Yitzhak!! That was the name missing
from my list!
Thank you all for helping me get the correct name!

Jewish graduates of the Alexander Railway school Jelgava #latvia

Robert Dupuis <R.Dupuis@...>

Dear Genners,

I'm searching for a list of Jewish graduates of the Alexander
Railway School in Mitau/Jelgava.

I suspect that my great-great grandfather Jacob David KANTOROVICH
(born 1830 in Slonim, Belarus, died in 1902 in St. Petersburg or Warsaw)
was a graduate of this school. He was married in 1860 in Riga with
Minne bat Isai/Isaak Keylman/Keilman. He worked >from 1863 to 1890 as
an officer of the St. Petersburg Warsaw railway company in Vilnius.
Previously, he worked as a reporter and translator for various newspapers.

The missing Colman FINKELSTEIN #general

Paul Silverstone

When Chaim FINKELSTEIN died in Winnipeg in 1920, the probate court
listed his heirs as his second wife Esther & children, Esther, Samuel,
Samson, Miriam and D.R. Finkelstein and a grandson, Earle, son of Colman
Finkelstein. My problem is son Colman.

Chaim and his three older children arrived in Canada in 1886. All except
Colman are listed in the 1891 census. Chaim’s first wife Annie died in 1899.

Next to her gravestone in Winnipeg is a monument to Calvin Finkelstein
that also lists the names Esther, Samuel, Samson and David. The photo I
have seen of it is illegible.

Is Calvin Colman? What happened to him and his family if those other
names are his family? I have found no records in the vital records of
Manitoba about him. Did some disaster wipe out the family except son Earle ?

Possibly Colman changed his name to Calvin and lived in some other part
of North America. When they died (if that is the case) the remains were
taken to Winnipeg to be buried in the family plot. Other than the
probate record no trace of Earle has been found.

I have also thought that Colman never came to America, but then who is
Calvin buried in the family plot?

Any suggestions as to what happened to Colman would be welcome.

Re: Internet publication of your family tree - Handle with care. #germany

John Paul Lowens <jplowens@...>

I join those who urge extreme caution about sharing your family data
on Internet sites. Be wary too about accepting family tree
information you find on the Internet as fact.

Years ago I paid a professional researcher to find my MOSES family
ancestral records >from Beerfelden (Odenwald, Hessen). The data
collected >from the primary sources there was later corroborated by the
work of other researchers and a reliable published book.

Not all my distant relatives were so careful. One of them posted a
family tree in the Family Tree of the Jewish People at JewishGen
saying that my 3 great grandfather Daniel MOSES was born in Baltimore
(USA - 1765) and that his father was born in 1753.

Be careful when sharing your family tree and very careful about
accepting "facts" >from public Internet family trees.

Another helpful tool online #galicia

Rivka Schirman <capitetes@...>

Another helpful tool online to determine the exact administrative seat
of the little place of birth corresponding to the 2nd Polish Republic
Administration is the "Skorowidz miejscowosci Rzeczypospolitej
Polskiej z oznaczeniem terytorjalnie im wlasciwych wladz i urzedow
oraz urzadzen komunikacyjnych": the Index of all place names of the
2nd Republic of Poland with corresponding governmental agencies
and offices.

It is available online through the Polish Federation of Online Libraries
at

http://www.wbc.poznan.pl/dlibra/doccontent?id=12786&from=FBC

In the first 21 pages you can learn which Powiat (District) belonged
to which Wojewodztwo (Province).

Pages 22-23 (images 24-25) contain the index of terms used.

from page 24 and on, are listed, by alphabetical order, all the places
in the 2nd Polish Republic, and information includes Miejscowoc
(name of Place) ; Gmina (Parish, community to which belonged this
place) ; Powiat (District); Wojewodztwo (Province), closest official
branch of Ministry of Post/Telegraph; closest train station (with
distance in km), and other general administrative information .

There is no personal information included in this publication and no
statistical information either. On the other hand, it might reveal a
very useful tool when trying to determine where exactly vital records
were issued between 1920-1939 and, consequently (if they survived)
where these and also in which archives the historical records of
these places are supposed to be held today.

The quality of the document is excellent and easily readable, and if
you need a special plug-in you'll be guided by the web-site.

Enjoy,

That is one of the problems with giving your entire work to someone and
specifically someone who posts online. The problem is that there is no
control over what is entered. There are automatic connections made by
Geni, which is fine if the information is correct, but you cannot be
sure that it is correct.

I was appalled to find a part of my family tree (which a
cousin had entered into Geni) combined with the tree of another cousin
whose information was totally spurious.

from then on, I have been careful never to give my entire tree to anyone
because you cannot be sure, ever, that whomever you gave your tree to
will remember your words of caution and their promise not to post it on
the internet.
