STEINER-STEVENS from Mor. Ostrava - family research #austria-czech

thatdudematt@...

Dear JewishGen,

I am researching the Czech family history of my Grandfather, Frantisek
STEINER, who was born in 1914 and lived in Mor. Ostrava before WWII.
He fled >from Czechoslovakia to the UK and joined the British Army
during the war, and left the rest of his family behind. It is believed
his family perished in the holocaust. His parents names were Artur
Steiner and Hedvika Steinerov. He also married a Hanna FEDERMANN,
with parents Dr Karel Federmann and Elsa Federmannova. He had a
brother named Kurt Steiner, who was married to a Marie Steinerova and
they had a son, Hanus Steiner. It is believed all except Frantisek and
Hanna perished in the holocaust.

I am interested if anyone knows any information about them, or can be
of assistance in finding more information. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. More details can be provided if needed.

Thank you very much for your time.

Yizkor- The Fate of Family Left Behind #austria-czech

norofra@...

This chapter of "Courage of the Spirit" examines the fate of the other
family members of the Weinberg brothers while they escaped >from Austria,
Czechoslovakia, Poland, and on to Central Asia. It concludes with an excerpt
from an essay by my father , Rabbi William Weinberg, written in the 1960's,
for the Bnai Brith "National Jewish Monthly" looking at what were the root
causes of anti-Semitism in his time .

***************************
Yizkor--The Fate of the Family Members Left Behind

What was it that the brothers had escaped?
Raoul Hilberg, noted historian of the Holocaust, the first one to apply
detailed statistical accounting to the Destruction of the European Jews, as
he titled his sweeping research of the political, economic, and military
resources brought to bear on the Jews. While it is important to note that
Nazism's victims numbered in many millions, it was the Jews that were
singled out as the prime enemy of the Third Reich and the prime target of
the largest manhunt in history. It was the culmination of a historic trend,
as he described: The missionaries of Christianity said: You have no right
to live among us as Jews. The secular rulers who followed had proclaimed:
You have no right to live among us. The Nazis at last decreed: You have no
right to live. Hilberg delineated the systematic processes of destruction:
the rollback of civil and human rights by a thousand years; the
expropriation of Jewish property; the deportation and concentration of Jews;
the killing process, first through mobile killing units and then through
killing centers.
My father had been through the loss of his civil rights, had lost his source
of income ( as the family had lost much of their finances), and had been
deported, luckily, to escape the ultimate bitterness of concentration and
destruction.

Re: Challenge find my great grandparents NYC marriage #general

Response to Allan Jordan and his search for his great grandparents' marriage
certificate. I searched for 15 years for my grandparents' marriage
certificate. I knew they were married because there was a divorce
proceeding. I had always assumed the my grandfather's name was Scher and my
grandmother's name was Roth, which is what had been used for years and both
had been here a few years by the time they married. I used the bride and
groom indexes on Italian Genealogy to search, but no luck. Finally I decided
to use Rothang, which was my gm's birth name, and there she was! It was
amazing. I just assumed they were using their American names, but I guess
for something so legal they decided to use their original birth names. My gf
was listed as Shur, but on the wedding certificate that last name was
spelled three different ways. My suggestion is to use the birth name with as
many variations as possible for both the given and surname, and use the
bride and groom indexes. I was never able to find these people in the census
anywhere under any name. My husband's theory is that they were spies and
eradicated all record of their existence<g>.

a post WWII mystery from France #general

Janette <janettes@...>

My recently discovered French relatives in Nancy, France described some
of what happened to their Samuel family during the war. I am not
looking for Page of Testimony - I have all those pertinent to these
families. I have been in touch with Yad Vashem and they sent me the ITS
information they had. The information I am looking for deals very
specifically with Blanche Samuel.

What I know is as follows:
Blanche Samuel was born on January 15, 1920 in Rambervillers, Vosges,
France. Her parents were Lucien Samuel and Renee Abraham (or Avraham).
She, along with two of her siblings and her parents were on Transport
71 >from Drancy to Auschwitz on April 13, 1944. ITS documents report
that she was in Bergen Belsen but lost track of her on April 19, 1945.
Other ITS documents report that she died between April 19, 1945 and May
1, 1945.

The family received a letter >from Blanche dated April 28, 1945 and
postmarked >from Hazebrouck May 7, 1945. In that letter, Blanche said
that she was alive after a year of extreme hardship and that she hoped
to be with the family soon, perhaps within a couple of weeks. I don't
have a time framework of what happened next. Blanche's sister-in-law
(my relative Andree) said that Blanche;s uncle went to meet a train on
which she was expected to arrive at Gare de l'Est in Paris, and she was
not on it. The uncle spoke to one of Blanche's friends who was on the
train and she said that Blanche was coming ont he next train. She was
never heard >from again.

I am open to suggestions of where to look.

Thanks for your help
