Chicago 1894 birth certificate #general

Hanna Grossman <hannakg@...>

I have a cousin (4C1R) Bertha Langsam, born Chicago 1/26/1894 according
to a Cook County birth certificate index.

I have found no record in the US of her father Bernhard Langsam or her
mother Bertha Kirchheimer except in this index. Bertha Kirchheimer
appears in a family tree >from a distant German relation, as born in 1872.

I have found no member of the family in any census, or arrival list.

Would the birth certificate give the family's address in 1894 - to
perhaps assist in finding them in the 1900 census?
If so, how can I get the birth certificate?

Any other suggestions for tracking this family?

I am interested to learn about any possible Jewish records for the former
Treptow (now Trzebiatow), Pomerania.

I am trying to solve a mystery of a family that kept their Jewish identity
a secret in the 1930's, and became Lutheran.

I would be interested to learn of any records >from the 1920's/1930's
period which could list whether they were originally Jewish.

Thanks so much. Gary Gershfield, New York City GMGKPC@aol.com

arrest in 1938 and freed Re: Family memoir #germany

Arline and Sidney Sachs

My father was arrested the morning after crystal nacht and was released
10 days later. He already had his passage booked.

According to records my uncle was arrested early too and then released,
but since he did not leave the country he was later taken again and
did not survive.

I think at the very beginning Hitler's aim was just to get rid of the
Jews and if they left the country that was OK. The extermination
started later.

This is a very important historic document written by Rabbi Neufeld of
Elbing, on the attacks on Elbing's Jews and the synagogue during
Kristallnacht, starting 9 November 1938. It is part of the digitized

ViewMate request: Transcribing 19-c German script / death certificate #germany

amgreene@...

Hello, all.

I just received a scan of my great-great-great-grandmother's page in
the registry of deaths >from Huettenheim, Germany.

I need some help decoding the 19th-century German handwriting. I can't
make out her given name; the family name is FRIEDMANN and her maiden
name is HESSBERGER.

There are two areas of interest which I've scanned in to ViewMate. The
first is the block of text which contains names, which is at

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM27275

The more intriguing bit is a note in the margin, written three years
later. I can make out just enough to know that something odd was going
on. This part is at

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM27273

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.

Re: DE JONA (DE YONA) family in Lviv (Lemberg) #general

Asparagirl <asparagirl@...>

Hi Isak,

Gesher Galicia has put many of the Jewish vital records for Lviv
(Lemberg) online for free searches in the All Galicia Database at
http://search.geshergalicia.org/ . Currently the database includes:

- Lviv Jewish Birth Records (1805-1871)
- Lviv Jewish Death Records (1805-1870)
- Lviv Jewish Marriage Records (1801-1866)

(These record sets are not 100% complete yet and will be updated
throughout 2013.)

I took a quick look at the data and I noticed that there were several
Jewish families listed in these Lviv records with similar names to
your YONA / JONA, including JONAS, JONNAS, JONES, JONASS, JANER, and
JOHN.

These names may represent the same family or small number of families
who had "creative" spelling variants -- for example, one person's
surname is listed as JONNER in one record and JONER in another,
another as both JOHN and JONAS, etc.

The names appear in some of the very earliest surviving Jewish vital
records in the city, including records I saw >from 1803 and 1805.
Granted, this is still 100 years after the time period you are
researching, but it is possible that these families are descendants or
relatives of your DE JONA physicians.

I have posted in ViewMate at the following address
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM27328
a photograph of the 1927 graduating class of the Panevezys Hebrew
Gymnasia.

My father Zvi(Hirsh/Girsh) SEGAL is in the 2nd row, far right.

He was born in Zagare in 1909, went to the Zagare Folk School,
continued his education in Paneveszys and left for Melbourne,
Australia in 1929.

His lifelong friend, Shmuel (Mula) GOLDSTEIN, (right end of 2nd
row >from the bottom), also ended up in Melbourne in the mid-1930s.

Perhaps someone can recognise a relative in this photograph.
