"Sounds like" may be often misleading. The scanned copy of the

ViewMate Translation Request - Bulgarian? #romania

Hello!

I have posted a letter on ViewMate (actually this is a re-posting) that
may have been written to/>from Zacharia TAUBMAN or possibly a person with
the surname of ALADJEM and may reference persons in Sofia, Bulgaria
and/or Bucharest, Romania. I have been told that the letter may be
written in Bulgarian. I would greatly appreciate a translation (direct
or loose). Alternatively, if anyone is able to identify the language
that would be very helpful as well!

The letter is posted as two separate files:

Viewmate legibility English passenger list? #general

Barrie Karp

Regarding two Viewmate images (one is detail/enlarged):
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM30039
and
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM30038
These two Viewmate images are now posted regarding my inquiry:

Legibility of English handwriting on passenger list: Regarding
passengers listed as numbers 27, 28, 29 (a mother F. Wien and 2
children: Jille and Neche): Can you read the names of the people
listed as destination (husband, father, and in-law) and the address?
What is the husband/father's name? Then it says: "c/o" -- can you read
what it says after that? Is it "mother-in-law"? Thank you. I have a
pdf and a zoomed/enlarged image of that section in a pdf file and also
in a jpg file, if you would like to see those.

Some responders have said the destination address is 32 Clinton Str.
and: husband S. L. Wien.

Other responders have not been able to read the c/o part.

One responder guessed that the c/o part says:
"The ship record you attached is for Samuel's wife and oldest two
children: her name is actually shown (kind of difficultly) as Tema =
Tillie, then Jitte = Yetta and Necha = Nettie. ... They were going to
"husband S L Wien c/o M Suklow? ____ Str 30 New York" - it definitely
does not say "in-law" though."

One responder says:
husband S.L. Wien, c/o Mother In Law, Clinton Str 30, New York

There is now confusion for me between Matilde Goldman, whose name is
above name of Samuel Leizer Wien's on their passenger list Jan 1900
Rotterdam to NY, and Tema Wien on the June 1900 passenger list,
Rotterdam to NY, with their 2 children, the latter passenger list
pictured in these 2 Viewmate images. Samuel Leizer Wien's wife's
maiden name was Goldman, and her first name was Matilde/Tilly/Tema.
Samuel and Matilde are listed as, each, single, not married, on the
Jan 1900 passenger list, and no children are with them as far as I can
discern. So I don't know if these are two different people named
Tema/Matilde Goldman or the same person. The destination of the
Matilde Goldman (seamstress) listed on the Jan 1900 passenger list is:
Age: 22. pass.lst. dest. "mother Sophie Malke Goldman, Orchard St."

My grandmother's (Rebeka Wien, Iasy, Romania, => Rotterdam, => NYC)
Oct 1900 passenger list says destination: brother Samuel Wien, Clinton
Str. 140 (or 190).

All of these people's last residence, before 1900 voyage from
Rotterdam to NYC, in different months for each of them, was Iasy,
Romania.

Thank you very much.

BlankAnne Kenison raised the subject of mapping one's Shtetel.

I used Google Earth to bring up my family Shtetl, Proletarsky (previously
Grafskoy) in the south-easteren Ukraine.

I compared this current satellite photo with maps, a village plan >from the
pre-Revolution period made by my uncle, old family photos of several
houses, photos >from a visit to the place by a relative and recent photos
taken by a local Ukrainian who takes village photos.

I was fortunate to have so much material to merge which enabled me to
labeled a printout of the satellite photo.
I even set up on a table a model of the village on which I layed out the
streets, placed the photos >from the various periods and gave a lecture to a
local genealogy group.

The village in question was one of the Jewish agricultural colonies in the
Ukraine and as it was a small place basically unchanged due to its
isolation, I was able to identify the matching elements. For large towns
which may have been severaly damaged by war and subsequent rebuilding and
renaming of streets, the project may be more difficult.

I have a relative buried in the Haschevater Aid Society section of
Montefiore Cemetery in Queens.

Can anyone identify the town that this would be associated with? It
would probably be in the Ukrainian region of the Russian Empire. I've
been unable to find any references online except a few entries in the
JewishGen Worldwide Burial Registry.
