WEINSTEIN and Samuels Manchester #unitedkingdom

aajacobus@...

After many years search I was delighted to find a close cousin in FBD :
Morris SAMUELS b 1887 ( aka Szmulewicz) married Hannah WEINSTEIN b 1889
married  Sep 1920 and they had several children in UK .
Morris SAMUELS  is found in 1911 Census Toxteth Park b.1887
I know Morris Samuels and family emigrated to Ireland ( Dublin ?) before
1939.
I found a large WEINSTEIN family in Manchester 1911 and I thought some
living  may well remember Hannah and Morris and know what happened to them .

Once again I appeal to the list generous members.

Greta Cohen >from England arrived in SA possibly 1956. Her parents were
Henry(aka Harry) and Lily Cohen who had a sweetshop in Cape Town. Henry was
born in Hackney London in 1901. Harry and Lily went out to SA in the
1950's. Greta may have married someone by the name of Flax. The surname
may be wrong but he had a factory in Cape Town making condoms. Any
information would be really helpful. Her cousin John Cohen is anxious to
make contact with her as she spent time with his family in the 1950's when
they were living in Cape Town. Henry and Lily returned to the UK in 1959.

Magnus Cohen family #unitedkingdom

Arlene Beare

I am helping my cousin John research the family of his late father Magnus
Cohen. Magnus married Dora Dorfman and went to SA about 1948.

David and Elsie nee Beishon were the parents of Magnus. David Cohen was
born in Liverpool in 1875 .He was the son of Henry Cohen born in Whitechapel
in 1830 and Henry was the son of Jacob John Cohen born in Whitechapel in
1789. There are also many offspring as David had 11 siblings. Rebecca Cohen
married Israel Isadore freedman. Abraham Cohen married Rachel Marks and
Samuel a sibling of David married Abigail Mendoza.

Magnus was born in 1901 in Hackney London. His siblings were Marguerite (aka
Greta) and in one census written as Margarita born in 1899. Henry aka Harry
born in 1903 and Samuel born in 1905.

We know nothing of Marguerite (aka Greta)Cohen and very little of Samuel
Cohen other than he had Tobacconists.

Henry married a gentile woman named Lily. The had one daughter Greta not to
be confused with her aunt who had the same name. They went to SA after the
war but returned to England about 1959. They had a sweetshop in Cape Town.

Any information on the family of Magnus would be appreciated.

Reinterpretation of Polish name "Ajdela"? #general

David W. Perle

Hi, all. I think I'm pretty decent at immediately "translating" old
recorded Eastern European names into more recognizable names, such as one
g-g-g-g-grandfather whose name I just discovered, "Laybus/Lejbus/Lajb/etc."
Smola, which is obviously Leib. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I
take for granted that Iceks had the Hebrew name Yitzchak. Etc. And when I
find these, I like to record the more recognizable versions of the names
into my personal records.

But I don't know **all** Hebrew or otherwise Jewish names. Case in point,
this Leib's wife, my g-g-g-g-grandmother. Different records show various
spellings: Ajdela, Ajdla, Aidel, Ejdel etc. But I have no idea what more
recognizable names those correspond to, or Hebrew name. Actually, it looks
almost like "Adel," but I don't know if that was even a name in English that
was in use in the early 1800s?

(US) Virginia Governor Announces Successful Launch of DMV/VDH Vital Records Partnership #general

Jan Meisels Allen

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe announced earlier this week the launch of
the partnership between the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and
the Virginia Department of Health Division (VDH) of Vital Records for
providing easier access to birth records. As of March 1, 2014 copies of
Virginia birth certificates are available at any of the 75 statewide DMV
service centers and 5 mobile offices.

The process at the DMV is the same as if a person goes directly through the
Division of Vital Records - complete an application, submit the required
documentation and pat the $14 fee to the DMV.

This new partnership was authorized by legislation in 2013 (SB 1039). On
January 1, 2015 the DMV will also begin issuing copies of death, marriage
and divorce records.
