JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Dear friends,
The documentary about my family roots in Moldova, Mamaliga Blues, is finished, and it will be screened at the International Conference on Jewish Genealogy in Salt Lake City. Date is July 28th, at 4:45PM. I would love to attend it and meet some of you in person for the first time, but I am in Brazil and will not be able to make it. Mamaliga Blues was screened this year in 2 major events in North America: at the Doc Shop in Canada and at the South East European Film Festival in Los Angeles. It is also planned to play at the Miami Jewish Film Festival in 2015. We have been planning screenings in Brazil and New York, and looking for further opportunities to show the film around the world :) For more information on the film, check: www.mamaligablues.com I hope you're able to make it to the screening! listings by initials in the Social Security Death Index

I thought my recent experience might be of interest...
I had reason to look up about 70 people in the Social Security Death Index, all born in 1945-1947. I almost missed seven of them because they were listed by their initials -- e.g. S. H. Bloom rather than Steven H. Bloom, W. S. Kaplan instead of William S. Kaplan, etc. If I hadn't already know their approximate birthdates, finding these common names would have been quite a challenge. (So far as I can tell, there's no way to do a wild card search for initials.) Renee Renee Stern Steinig Dix Hills, New York, USA

Namensgebung Amtsblatt Muenster 1846 Nummer 2 01 bis 204

Lin <lin2@...>
Hi GerSIG Friends,
Is there a way to get a copy of pages on the Official Naming Journal of Muenster? Also, no one has been able to trace my grandmother's (Elly HUMBERG HERZ) father's family farther back than my great great great grandfather. His name, depending on where you get your information was Moses Abraham HUMBERG or Abraham Moses HUMBERG (1769 - 1847). A distant cousin hired or worked in concert with a German genealogist Herbert Schuurman (umlauts on both "u"s.) and that's as far as they got. A website that deals mainly with another HUMBERG branch has our patriarch as Abraham Moses HUMBERG but Mr. Schuuman has his name as Moses Abraham. I am interested in finding out his actual name, and going back farther if there is a way. No one has been able to find where the name HUMBERG came >from or a naming list where the first family member took the name. Any suggestions? Thanks so much. Best, Lin Herz, Palm Bay, Florida <lin2@...>

INTRO - researching HENRY from Germany
#germany
Tim Homewood
Hello GerSig,
I just joined the group. I have been doing genealogy research for 2 months. I consider myself to be a beginner in doing German Jewish Genealogy research. I live in London, UK. My native language is English. I consider myself expert in using a computer. My experience in using the Internet is extensive. I have identified the names and birth and death dates of my great great grandparents. My primary research goal is to find out the birthplaces of my 3x great grandfather, Solomon HENRY and his wife Jane (maiden name unknown). The information I have so far is: 1. 1820-1823: Michael HENRY, son of Solomon, was born in Whitechapel, London (source - various censuses) 2. about 1825: Leah HENRY (my great great grandmother) was born in Whitechapel London (sources - various censuses) 2. 1841: Solomon HENRY is the head of the household at Leman Street, Whitechapel, London in the 1841 census. He is 53, watch maker, born of "Foreign Parts". His wife, Jane HENRY is 52. His daughter Leah is 16. 3. 1850: Solomon HENRY, is the father of Leah HENRY on her marriage certificate for 28 February 1850 at the Great Synagogue in London. Solomon's profession is Dealer. 4. 1851: Solomon HENRY is the head of the household at 190 Ratcliff Highway, Tower Hamlets, London in the 1851 census. *** He is 64, watch maker, born in Germany. *** Jane HENRY is 72. Leah HENRY and her husband Lewis JACOBS are both in the household. 5. 1861: Jane HENRY is living with Lewis and Leah in Whitechapel and is described as a Widow, implying Solomon is now dead. I haven't found a marriage record for Solomon and Jane and I haven't found a death record for Solomon (Jane died in 1865). Jane is always described in the census as having been born in Middlesex however I can't find a birth record for her (about 1789 based on census ages). I would like to be able to trace back my family both through Solomon and Jane and feel there should be some records in the UK that can identify some more about Solomon's origins. So far my efforts have all been through online indexes but I'm living in London and keen to do some on the ground investigation. The official records seem to have very little about the family yet they seem to have clearly been in and around London at various times. Any help would be appreciated. Tim Homewood, London, UK, tim@... Moderator note: This message should be sent to the UK SIG list.
