Badatelna website #austria-czech

holijoli@...

The new format for postings on the badatelna.eu website is NOT an improvement.
1. The page listings on the left interfere with the rest of the text
2. The pages (strana) are not numbered, making it almost impossible
to find again easily. This also makes referencing difficult.
3. The only way to print an entry is to use "Print Screen". On my
computer it only works by printing to Dropbox, in the Cloud.
4. The arrow for proceeding to the next page does not work.

I hope that if others of you are having the same problems, you let
Lenka Matusikova know.

Dear Stephen,

regarding your question I reply to the list as well:

*** ? ***

I have found this information which looks somewhat like the URL you had
for the sample image in your e-mail:

http://web.nacr.cz/pomucky/zoomify/NAD0029/MZA-Brno/NAD0314/289-291/026/TileGroup0/0-0-0.jpg

But I do not know how to modify this to match the format of your example.

*** /? ***

Just cut the part when the „TileGroup“ starts, your new URL (to page 26 of
this document, it is only page-per-page) would be

http://toolserver.org/~kolossos/image/zoomify.php?zoom=4&path=http://web.nacr.cz/pomucky/zoomify/NAD0029/MZA-Brno/NAD0314/289-291/026/

(note: this specific request needs a "zoom level" to be set to 4 [the
highest resolution] before the path to the tile; this is only the case
with some of the documents)

Best

Niko

Is there any explanation on what is in the Familianten Records and how
to work with them. In the inventory, I see only a number of
districts. Does this just cover Bohemia? Is it all of Bohemia? What
years?

Re: Russian "selo" and "derevnya" both translate as village. What is the difference? #bessarabia

info@...

Dear Barry,
"selo" is village with church, "derevnia" is village without church (usually
smaller).
There is also "khutor" which means even more smaller than "derevnia" village.

The distinction has nothing to do with nationality of population (Ukrainian
vs Russian). It has been strictly used in Russian Empire to describe
settlements, as for example in the 1897 census.

Hope that helps

I intended to send this message to Heather DUBNICK who wanted to know
about the Linitz community in Newark, but it could go to anyone
interested in old Newark New Jersey. This is a wonderful website on
old Newark. A detailed listing is included on the Jewish cemeteries:

Re: "Zaslav" - Zaslavl or Izyaslav (Ukraine) ? #belarus

Guy Levin <guy.f.levin@...>

My great-grandfather's city of origin according to the ship manifest we have
is given as just "Zaslav" in English.
This was in 1912, so at that time, the Russian Empire included what is
today Belarus and Ukraine.
If I recall correctly, according to what I've seen on JewishGen,
Zaslav could be the Yiddish pronunciation of both Zaslavl, Belarus and
Izyaslav, Ukraine.

Have any of you out there had this confusion?
Suggestions on how to determine which is the more likely town in my case?

The ship left >from Bremen. They came to Philadelphia, FWIW.
Subject name: Yitzchok / Isak (Isadore) Leibson, wife Eva nee Gorsky,
and children.

(Thanks to Y.b.S. for giving me the idea to post this.)

Thanks very much in advance for your time.

Anyone know what the difference is between a "selo" and a "derevnya"?

Various web sites translate both as "village". In Duma voters lists from

1905 and 1906 both appear with town names. Is one bigger than the other?

Is there some defining difference? The voters list compilers note them

specifically for certain towns so I assume was a difference.
Barry,

1. "Selo" was known as a farming community with the church.
In "derevnya" was no church.

2. Within "selo" several "derevnyas" could be located

3. Derwvnyas were smaller by size and amount of residents

4. Traditionally, names of selo have been ending with "-oe", and
derevlyas have been ending with "o"

5. Compare in Polish with similar "gmina" and "wies" (or wioska)

Jewishgen Ukraine:

"Derevnya is a name of a locality with a few dozen single family
houses. Originally, the difference between derevnya and selo is
the size and the absence of a church in a derevnya. No such
difference currently exists"
