Research method for associating related ancestors #general

Avigdor Ben-Dov <avigdorbd@...>

In attempting to work with a large db (about 250 names) of a single
family surname, I found it helpful to sort an Excel file by year for
each person BMD so that I could isolate same-generation events and
distinguish between people who are named for their ancestors and later
generations and not make the mistake of identifying, for example,
Abram of 1845 with an Abram of 1897 having different birth years. The
problem comes up when a marriage year doesn't make sense with a birth
year for a same given name due to unreasonable ages. Can someone
suggest a more elegant method to build a relationship table from
disparate BMD data? I realize, of course, that if I work only from
indexes I am limiting myself, but I can't see it helpful to order
dozens of documents that need translation (and are expensive) without
first doing some preliminary work of this sort.

Dear Nita,

JRI-Poland has several thousand Mielec records. For the period of
time that interests you, most are online, at jri-poland.org. Others
are available for a donation to JRI.

If you write me next week, I'll be happy to tell you more. (Right
now I'm at the Jewish genealogy conference in Salt Lake City.)

Do you have any records for Mielec, Galicia for the period
1870 to 1910 and if so how can I access them?

Jewish refugees in Shanghai, China #general

Alexander Watson <a.watson.genas@...>

Hello again,

I am looking for information about the Jewish community in Shanghai,
China & more particularly those who took refuge there >from Nazi
persecution during the run-up to the Second World War. I am
particularly looking for information about 2 individuals:

Eugen/Eugent or Eugend STERNBERG: born in Polgsen, now Pelczen in
Poland on 29/08/1884 & his wife Paula

Bruno FABIAN: Probably born in Berlin, Germany of Neuwedell W
Pomerania, now Drawno, Poland on 21/06/1887. Bruno is thought to have
died of Amoebic dysentry on 23/08/1943 in Shanghai.

I would be very grateful for being put in contact with any
organisations able to help me find information about these people.

With many thanks

Steamships out of Eastern Europe #general

Helen Krag

There is an entire book written about getting steamship passengers out
of Galicia. It was in the interest of the companies. The book is about
other details in the out-of-Galicia-traffic, too. The book is in German
written by an excellent Austrian researcher and author. For those who
read German, I can recommend it highly.

Martin Pollack: Kaiser von Amerika. Die große Flucht aus Galizien.
Zsolnay, Wien 2010, ISBN 978-3-552-05514-8.

Polish town or suburb? called Zalewy #poland

Avigdor Ben-Dov <avigdorbd@...>

I can't find Zalewy on any gazeteer of JewishGen and it is listed in
the Lomza Gub. 1897 census for a few people as place of residence or
birth (RUTKIEWICZ).
Can someone give me the geo-coordinates or identify its location? I
place it near Zawady in-between Lomza and Bialystok in NE Poland.
Could it be the same village?

Translation of Hebrew matzevah - ViewMate #germany

Jeff Lewy <airbair@...>

I've posted a photo of my great-grandmother's tombstone in Hebrew (in
Helena, Arkansas, USA) for which I need a translation. The other side
of the tombstone is in English, which states her name, Bertha Lewy,
that she was born in Ostrowo, Prussia on 15 Jan 1839 and died
on 3 September, 1883.

I am interested to learn anything that is different or added on the
Hebrew side, such as her Hebrew name or her father's name, or any
formulaic expressions found on the matzevah. I would also like to
confirm that the Hebrew dates are consistent with the English dates.

It is on ViewMate at the following address ...

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.
