JewishGen Education Classes -- August-September #galicia

Phyllis Kramer

Just to remind JewishGenners that we have three current offerings:

- Beginning Genealogy in the U.S. (August 25) focuses on immigrant
ancestors and their immediate families in the United States. This course
is essentially a personal mentoring program through our conversational
online FORUM. Students read/download our lessons, then post an
ancestral branch, set goals for their research, and work one on one with
the instructor. Our forum is open 24/7; there are no set times because
our students are international; tuition $100

- Basic 3 (Getting Organized, Sept 5) - Drowning in Paper? Time to get
your genealogical projects organized? JewishGen offers a two week
course with easy lessons on files and folders, handling your media files,
getting ready to publish and much more. This Value Added Class course
is open 24/7 on the JewishGen forum. Here you can download the
lessons and work on the exercises at your own speed. This class is
available at no charge to Genners who have donated $100 within the
last twelve months (under Value Added Services); tuition $18.

- Basic 4 (Cite Your Sources, September 28) - Wondering how to write
citations for Internet sources? Confused by Ancestry, FamilySearch and
JewishGen citations for the same records? Take a class. We will cover
the kinds of records, the evidence necessary for proof standards and
practice writing citations that makes sure your records are preserved.
This Value Added Class course is open 24/7 on the JewishGen forum.
Here you can download the lessons and work on the exercises at your
own speed. This class is available at no charge to Genners who have
donated $100 within the last twelve months (under Value Added

Please look at the full course descriptions, requirements, tuition,
instructors etc. and then enroll at www.jewishgen.org/education

need to get copies of any burial records they might have for these individuals.
(Documents, death certificates, etc.) Has anyone obtained this information
from the Beth David cemetery office?
I do not believe you will find any of this at the cemetery office. They do not
hold a lot of records and I have had very little luck with Beth David in
particular.

The death certificates through the late 1940s are the the NYC Municipal
Archives and after that are still at the Health Department.

The cemetery records should show the next of kin or who took responsibility for
the graves. But even then those records are often out of date on old graves
and the cemetery offices do not like to share that information. Sometimes you
can coax it out of them by asking questions or such. But >from my experience the
cemetery office does not keep a lot of old paper work.

Sometimes you can have some success if you can figure out the name of the
funeral home. Some of them seem to keep records forever and sometimes are very
willing to tell you what they have in their files.

They often helped with a paid death notice if one was placed in a local
newspaper and sometimes still have the copies.

Goldman (and Winnitz) from Rozdil, Ukraine (and Mykolayiv) #galicia

Moishe Miller

Dear Group,

I hope everyone is having a pleasant summer. I am writing for both
guidance and opinion.

Yehosua (Osias) Winnitz married Yetta Elka Goldman. He was born 1849
in Lviv. She was born about 1848, probably in Rozdil, Ukraine. I base
this assumption on the birth record of their daughter Shprintze (Sprince)
in 1884, in Rozdil, which lists "Mother- Ite goldman, dtr of Ettel and
Eisig Goldman ?merchants in Rozdol, legal wife of Osias Winnitz."

I wanted to see if I could take the Goldman family further back, with
dates and locations for ancestry. I found in the Rozdil records a death
for

* Goldman, Eisig passed away in 1878, age 52. It is recorded here
under Akt 62:
http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=35035

* Goldman, Eisik passed away in 1880, age 1 month, son of Osias and
Itte (Sounds like the Winnitz's had a son and named him after his
maternal grandfather and that son passed away.) It is recorded here
under Akt 72:
http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=35036

* Goldman, Etla passed away in 1898, age 70, spouse of Eisik
DIAMAND. It is recorded here under Akt 88:
http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=35037

Any opinions as to these being Yetta Elke's parents and son? Does it
mean that Yetta Elke is really a GOLDMAN by birth and her marriage
was to Eisik DIAMAND?

Does anyone have more thoughts or ideas?

Thank you,
Moishe Miller
