(Canada) Bill Before Parliament to Reinstate the Mandatory Long-Form Census #general

Jan Meisels Allen

An Act to Amend the Statistics Act, Bill C-626, would reinstate the
mandatory long-form census will be before the House of Commons at second
reading on Thursday, January 29. It is item 5 in the bill. The long-form is
the census form that contains the individual information that genealogists
and descendants wish to access after the 92-year release (the required
length of time by Canada for releasing such information). The bill language
states the long-form census is to comply with the length and scope of
previous censuses and specifically mentions the 1971 census and the every
five-year census >from 1981-2006. To read the bill see:

The bill also addresses the appointment of the chief statistician,
prescribing additional duties and increases the independence of that role in
carrying out his/her duties.

History
The mandatory long-form census was implemented in 1971-since then there have
been two census forms: a long form and a short form. When the long-form was
mandatory it had a 94 percent response rate.
Statistics Canada's mandatory long-form census was abolished by the Harper
government. A "voluntary" census was instead imposed which had a low
response rate-68 percent. In 2010, Statistics Canada abandoned the long-form
for the 2011 census and turned over to the National Household Survey (NHS) a
voluntary long form. In 2010 the Canadian House of Commons voted to restore
the long-form but the then government Industry Minister stated he would not
heed the Commons motion.

JDC: All Post-Holocaust Period American Joint Distribution Records Digitized #general

Jan Meisels Allen

The American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) announced they have
digitized all of its post-Holocaust era collections 1945-1954. The
materials are searchable on the JDC website. One can search by text
collection, photo collection or names ( person, ship or location). To access
the collection go to: http://tinyurl.com/6nhctzh
Original url:
http://search.archives.jdc.org/search.asp?lang=ENG&dlang=ENG&module=search&p
age=criteria&rsvr=2&param=%3Cuppernav%3Ecomplex%3C/%3E&param2=&site=ideaalm

For an example, on the left side of the window where it gives a list of
finding aids I clicked on NY Office 1945-1954 and I chose under advanced
search (center of same page) a names search. I filled in a literal first
and last name and made the other searches "fuzzy" you are given a dropdown
box to select the type of search you want. >from the finding aid which opened
in a new window I clicked the url under alternative form of material for JDC
Archives Database, another window opens given you a list of scanned
documents. I clicked on the one I wanted to see. While it is a multi-step
process the documents are well worth it. I strongly encourage you to read
the helping aides and watch the helping videos before trying your searches.

If you have questions, please do not ask me instead contact the JDC. There

NYC newspapers #general

Mark Fearer

Howdy - I've searched the Jewishgen info files, and wasn't
able to find an answer, although it's likely been discussed
here before, so my apologies. My question is, when our non-famous
immigrant ancestors who lived in Manhattan died, were they likely to
have an obituary in any local publications, between 1890-1940?
The Forward? It seems unlikely they would appear in the NY Times. Where - if
anywhere - might there be an obituary?

TIA

Louis LEWANDOWSKI 1821-1894 Family Tree #general

Rene van Wijngaarden

Dear all,

I wonder if anybody knows about the children/ family tree of the
famous composer of liturgical music Louis "Lazarus" LEWANDOWSKI
His wife's name was Helen.

He was born in 1821 in Wreschen, Pozen, now Poland and died in 1894 in
Berlin and is buried together with his wife Helen in the Weissensee cemetery.

On his grave monument is inscribed:
"Liebe macht das Lied unsterblich" and also the text
"Unsere geliebten Eltern" which confirms the couple had children.

You can take a look at the grave monument at the website shown below:

Abraham KATZENSTEIN,the eldest son of my great-great-grandparents Loeb
aka Leopold KATZENSTEIN and Sarah HECHT appears in the 1880 census. I
have found no other records of him and no one in the family know
anything about him. Not surprisingly, he was named after his paternal
grandfather. Loeb and Sarah's second son was named Jacob after his
maternal grandfather.
According to the 1880 census, Abraham was born about 1874 in New York.
Given that he does not appear on the 1900 census, I presume he died
before then. How can I find other evidence of his life and death and
burial?
