Minsk records at YIVO #belarus

bernerfolk

After several years trying to pin down my ancestral shtetl I'm casting
a wide net in hopes of snagging something I can run with. One "net" is
an anecdote that my GGM was >from "Minsk" so I've been searching the
material on JG, without luck so far.

As I'm sure SIG members know, YIVO has a set of the Minsk Kahal
records. According to their catalogue it includes Births for the years
1879-1900. I'm especially interested in births during the period
1884-1891, as well as other vital records during that period. I saw
some posts in the elist archive about the records but they are several
years old so I'd appreciate learning the current status of the YIVO
archive indexing.

Are all of the YIVO B-M-D records indexed? Are they all in the Belarus
Database on JG or is this an ongoing project?

Any insights on the YIVO records or other resources for my period of
interest would be appreciated,
Sherri Venditti

(US) PBS to Air Documentary on 350 Years of Jewish Migration to the United States #general

Jan Meisels Allen

The Public Broadcasting System (PBS) will be showing a documentary on 350 Years of
Jewish Migration. While this is scheduled to play across the United States it is
up to each local PBS station to decide when. I have found it playing in Chicago on
March 2 at 7:30 PM on WTTW and in Los Angeles on KOCE on March 18 at 7:30 PM. It's
a one-hour program. Therefore, it is best if you check with your local PBS station
as to when/if it will be shown. The Los Angeles Jewish Journal published an
article about it this week which can be read at:

I have posted to ViewMate three Vienna Population Record cards for

each document, and I know these people are crucial to my research, but
I'm having difficulty understanding the details such as place of
origin, where they were living, where they were going, occupation,
etc.

Bialy Kamien: Additional Years of Record Indices Now Available #general

Mark Halpern

We have exciting news for researchers with an interest in Bialy Kamien. Currently,
the JRI-Poland database only includes indices of 1879-1903 births and 1862-1897
deaths. However, JRI-Poland has advanced funds to index the following records
at the AGAD Archive. Deaths: 1897-1913

Our goal is to fully index all records as part of the next phase of the Bialy
Kamien project. The AGAD Archive project hires professionals to index the records.
This approach gives us the highest quality data. This is the cost that must be
recovered >from interested researchers before these indices can be added to the
JRI-Poland online database.

We are counting on all researchers with an interest in their family's Bialy Kamien
area roots to support this project. While a donation of any size would be
welcomed and appreciated, JRI-Poland has set a Qualifying Contribution of $100.
This will enable contributors to receive information for your family in these Bialy
Kamien records prior to the data being posted online. While we hope all researchers
with an interest in Bialy Kamien will donate the qualifying amount, those who have
made a previous qualifying donation to the Bialy Kamien project are eligible for a
discount of 50%. Information on how to contribute is available at
www.jri-poland.org/support.htm. Please make sure to apply your contribution
to "AGAD-Bialy Kamien."

Please contact me with any questions or for more information on the AGAD
Archive project.

Reichsvereinigung der Juden: Letter A #germany

Lande

I have completed a database identifying all Jews registered with the the
Reichsvereinigung (and their fate to the extent known) whose family names
begin with the letter A. A copy has been sent to GerSig and may be
accessed/researched there but if anyone wants to look at entire list, as
well as my previous list for persons whose surnames begins with the Letter L
they may contact at plande@ushmm.org and I will be happy to provide them. I
have started working on the letter B and, if I live for another twenty
years, hope to finished the project.

Gedenkbuch [Memorial book of Holocaust victims]-Who is included? #germany

Lande

There seems to be some confusion as to whether "German" Jews deported >from
neighboring countries are included in the Gedenkbuch. The Bundesarchv's
policy is clear. If a Jew, with or without German citizenship, who had
resided in Germany in 1933 or later, and then emigrated, say to Holland,
Belgium or France, and subsequently was deported/perished he/she is
included in the Gedenkbuch. In fact, the names of thousands of such persons
already appear in the book/website and the Bundesarchiv is prepared to add
names where documentary information can be furnished. If a person left
Before 1933 he/she is not included on the thesis that this was not flight
from the Nazis.
