Re: advice for newbies #dna

Steve Adelson <sjadelson@...>

Anita,

I'd strongly recommend autosomal before YDNA and mtDNA tests, if your
purpose is to find cousins. The Y and mt tests examine your direct maternal
or paternal lines, and are more useful for confirming or denying a
connection along those exact lines. Autosomal will cover your whole tree,
back perhaps 150 years; in individual cases, sometimes several hundred
years, but those are much more difficult to show on paper as well as the
DNA. A perfect match on YDNA (if we're talking, say, Y67) might still be
200 years back. A perfect match on full mtDNA might be 600 years. They
might be a lot more recent too, but unless you have documentation as well,
that's not going to help you much.

In general, DNA will support documentation - or in some rarer cases, show it
to be untrue. DNA testing without documentation is much less useful. If
you can afford to do all the testing, go for it. But given that few people
have reliable paper trees beyond two hundred years, do an autosomal test
first.

Best,
Steve Adelson

Have any of you used the FT-dna Y-chromosome test or the mitochondrial-dna
instead of or in addition to the autosomal dna test?

I don't know what to buy.

Thanks again,
Anita Berk

Eliyahu Goldenberg #general

Edwin Parks

Good afternoon everyone. A few days ago I asked if anyone had any
information on an Ela Goldenberg who might have served in WW2. I now
think the correct name might be Eliyahu Goldenberg (perhaps also known
as Goldberg) a well known entertainer etc in Israel. I think he cut
his entertaining teeth as a director/producer with the Palestine
British Army Entertainment Group in Italy while serving in the
Palestine Regiment with the Jewish Brigade Group. Has anybody any
information on his military life?? And as always a death certificate
or burial record would be useful! Thanks in advance, Eddie Parks
