Dear Geners,

I think with a Yiddish accent the name may have been pronounced Hoisenrot
, which means red hose (or pants). Also it could have been Rothoisen with
the two words reversed (think lederhosen). Another comment is that Poland
did not exist for a period of years - it was split between Germany and
Russia. My Warsaw family at times reported that they were >from Warsaw,
Russia. Once Poland came back into existence - their birth returned to

Hello fellow seekers,

My husband's grandmother, Esther ALBERT, was born in England in March,
1887. Her birth certificate, >from the district of Whitechapel, lists her
mother as Rachel ALBERT, formerly HOSENROTT. Subsequent U.S. census records
indicate that she was >from Russia, although my husband's mother thought she
was >from Poland. I have not been able to find the name HOSENROTT anywhere.
Rachel spoke Yiddish so it was likely the registrar could not understand her
well. Can anyone come up with a possible alternative spelling to the name
HOSENROTT?

Thank you for letting me join you! The introductory email suggested
that I introduce myself so here goes:

I just joined the group as I am doing genealogy research on my family.
I have been working at this for about 6 months and am definitely an
beginner in doing German Jewish Genealogy research. To date, I haven't
made it further than the family history that was provided to me, as
well as making a few connections to other previously published works.

I live in Chicago, IL in the US and am a native English speaker. I
currently lack sufficiently fluency in any other language for
genealogical conversations.

I am an advanced computer and internet user.

I am tracing the family of my German-born grandfather, Otto WEIL. He
is still alive and has shared family trees that trace names and birth
dates of certain lines going back to my 4th great-grandparents.

My great-grandparents were cousins so the line is easier to trace.
However, I'd still like to learn more about the other names on that
side of the family tree.

My primary research goals now are to find out my family's life in Berlin
Aprior to the war as well as the their move >from Steinheim to Berlin.

My JGFF Researcher ID number is 689057.

I have not yet entered any information into JGFF. I'd like to do that
soon but I am still learning my way around the site.

What I know of my German Jewish ancestors so far is:

Herz HERZFELD and Zarle HERZ (Hirschland?) had daughter Fanny.
Fanny HERZ and Abraham WEIL had 4 children including sons including
Knoowes and Michaelis.
Knoowes and Michaelis both had sons that they named Abraham.
Knoowes' Abraham had a daughter Hedwig.
Michaelis' Abraham had a son Rudolf.
Rudolf WEIL and Hedwig Weil married and had Otto, Lotte, and Hilde.
Otto WEIL is my maternal grandfather.

I know that Rudolf and Hedwig lived in Berlin with their children but

Voter Lists in Lithuania #general

Hi - I am researching the CHARNEY families that lived in Kavarskas,
Lithuania during part of the second half of the 19th century. The
particular branch I am interested in appears in the 1877 Box Taxpayers
List but not the 1880 or 1882 Voters Lists. However, I don't think I
can conclude that my branch moved away between 1877 and 1880 because
the Voters Lists contained less than a quarter of the names on the Box
Taxpayers List. Does anyone know what the qualifications were for
being included on the Voters Lists at that time?

As we know, Ashkenazi Jews traditionally name children for dead
relatives, usually recently deceased, particularly prominent
relatives, most often ancestors. If the child's naming took place
after her mother died in childbirth, it would have been routine to
name the daughter for her mother, "evil eye" notwithstanding.

As for Evertjan Hannivoort's comment about adding a name, this is a
different topic: When someone has a very serious illness, a name is
indeed added in a ceremony. The concept is if a person is condemned
to death in some celestial listing by his/her name, a change in name
could "confuse" the Satan/angel of death.

No randomized, controlled, double-blinded trials have (yet?) proven
the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of this method.

Halifax, she was actually headed for the U.S. Have you looked for her
there? Halifax is close to Maine, and I believe the fare to Canada
was cheaper than the fare to the U.S., so she may have voyaged to
Halifax intending to go to Boston or NY or some other location in the
northeastern U.S. (My grandfather sailed to St. John, New Brunswick,
Canada and, according to family legend, then walked to New York City.)

Just because Sarah is buried in Rochester, NY, does not mean that she
died in Rochester. My grandmother, Gussie Rubinstein, is buried in
Queens, NY, but she died in Miami-Dade County, Florida in 1957.
Another Gussie Rubinstein died in Brooklyn around the same time.

Also, don't trust that her name is correct on the death certificate.
It took me 3-1/2 years to find my ggm's grave. Her name is Tillie
Karasik. Her death certificate has her name as Tiba Harasik. The
cemetery records had her listed as Toba Harasik. Her gravestone reads
Tillie Karasik. And there is a Tillie Karasick buried in the same
cemetery. My ggm died in 1926, the other Tillie died in 1927.

You might want to contact the cemetery office and see if they have her
death certificate on file or what info they have for her. Also, if
she is buried in a society section of the cemetery, see if that
society is still in existence and contact them.
