Tracking immigration to Israel #general

pauline rosenberg

Hi all,

My father had a cousin in the Kielce area of Poland who left for Israel in the
1930's. His name was Baruch KUPKA.

Is there any information system that tracks immigrants who have come to Israel?
Also, if he changed his name (which some Israelis did), how could I research
that?

This is an entire branch of the family we have lost track of, and I would love
to find them.

Thanks,

Pauline Rosenberg

Re: Would Jews be identified as soldiers in marriage record? #general

Martin Davis (com)

Pauline Rosenberg <paulinerosenberg@hotmail.com> asked,"If a Jewish man
(Congress Poland) who had served in the Russian army married, would it
indicate on his marriage record that he was a soldier?"

The short answer is 'possibly' - but their primary trade or profession would
have to be 'soldier'. So rather than having 'served', I think he would have
to be a serving soldier at the time of marriage. The best source of general
information on Jewish service in the Imperial Russian Army can be found at

The family of Shlioma Abramovitz/Friedman, b 1875, Courland, son of Moses S. Friedman #courland #latvia

Judith F. Russell <jrussell2@...>

Might a family have been called Friedman in Courland, Abramovitz in Pasvalys
Lithuania, then Friedman again upon emigration to USA? It seems possible
with my family, but I am uncertain of the Courland aspects.

The included text, below, is my family on the 1908 Revision list for
Pasvalys, Lithuania, my grandfather being Shlioma Abramovitz who was known
in USA as Sol Friedman. This family was in Pasvalys for a time and also
Wilkasviskis. Moses is said to have been married previous to his marriage
to Mere Gita Caesarsky/Tsarsky.

However, Shlioma's WWII draft registration and other family notes have their
origin as Courland. Shlioma would have been born >from 1870 - 1880 in
Courland, his father was Moses.

So, the family was known in the USA as Friedman and I wonder if it is
possible that Friedman/Freidman was also their name in Courland before they
were in Pasvalys as Abramovitz? I ask because I see a Moses Freidmann,
correct age, father Schmuel, in the 1871 Recruitments list through the
Latvia, Courland Registers available on ancestry.com. He was >from Kuldiga.
Grateful for your thoughts and suggestions. I'd be glad to supply further
details.

Inquiry into Maternal Jewish lineage- Horeish/Hereish/Hereysh/Horeysh.... #scandinavia

JeanPierre Juliet <jeanpierre2308@...>

To all who can assist me,

I am >from Australia. I am 30 years of age.

Firstly I'd like to wish you all a Shanah Tovah!

I have been searching for my maternal great grandmother's family
records, migration paths, censuses and any relevant information on
the direct family tree.

My great grandmother was born approximately in the 1920s. I know
this much, that her parents moved to the Middle East at some
indefinite point in time and were forced to convert to the Shi'ite
sect of Islam.

This still baffles my mother and my grandmother to this day, since
we do not know why or when this occurred and what drove my great
grandmother's family to the Middle East in the first place!

I found that her family's name in various databases(Czech, Austria,
Romania, Germany, Israel) phonetically matches the following formats
since immigration officers/ record keepers were notorious in spelling
this surname: (please note: CH, KH & H sounds at the start of the
name are equivalent depending on which country transliterated the name)
HOIRESH
HOREISH
HEREISH
HERESH
HORESH
HOREYSH
HARESH

I would like to firstly obtain information on the family history. I
am only aware that my maternal line come >from Jewish German/Bohemian/
Scandinavian and Iberian descent.

If there is anyone who can assist me to find the migration routes,
historical information, or any documentation, family trees etc. of my
maternal great grandmother's line, you would have literally solved my
family's long-lost puzzling history and my greatest appreciation
would be extended to you!

I hope to hear >from someone who can assist me!

Warmest Regards & Shalom,
