Why did they marry twice? #lithuania

RICHARD FRIEDMAN

I am researching my grandmother`s family and I came across a listing
that shows Reiza KURLIANDCHIK marrying Khaim Iosel BAK twice: once on
October 5, 1898 and the second time on April 18,1900. Both wedding took
place in Panevezys, Lithuania and had the same rabbi. One witness was
the same but the other was different in the second marriage. Both
marriages are recorded separately. Could anyone tell me why they would
have to marry twice since both marriage were performed by a rabbi and
were recorded?

Przerosl cemetery video #poland

Hank Mishkoff

My fifth cousin Jonathan Misch (a Myszkowski descendant, like me)
visited Przerosl in June and recorded a video in the Jewish Cemetery
there. I've posted the video on the home page of the project to restore
the cemetery, which is at http://www.Przerosl.com/. Just follow that link
and click on the video to view it. It's only 15 minutes long -- and like
many tours of decaying Jewish cemeteries in Europe, it's both sad and
fascinating at the same time.

The cemetery does not appear to have been vandalized, but 75 years of
neglect have left it looking more like a wooded lot than a cemetery.
But having said that: Some headstones are still visible, and some of
those appear to be legible. I say "appear to be" because I don't read ...
Hebrew -- but if you do, and if you have family >from Przerosl, take a
look, the video might hold some pleasant surprises for you.

If you are able to translate any of the more-legible fragments, please
let me know pprivately so as not to clutter up this discussion. Thank you!!

Re: 19th-beginning of the 20th century: List of Jewish Political Prisoners from Belarus sent to Siberia #belarus

JHRG of Belarus <belshtetl@...>

Dear All,

During the second half of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, the
mass wave of political prisoners were sent to Siberia.
The majority of prisoners were educated people who were against the Tzar.
By the early 20th century, some 300,000 people were sent to Siberia and
some were Jews. By 1897, nearly 32,600 Jews, with their families, were
living in Siberia. This number includes prisoners who decided to stay,
with their families.
Here is list of 30 Jews political prisoners who were sent to Siberia

New Genealogy ebook on JGSGB site #courland #latvia

Arlene Beare

I have updated my Guide to Jewish genealogy in Latvia and Estonia and it is
now in ebook format. I must stress that this will be of use to researchers
not only >from Latvia and Estonia but elsewhere in Eastern Europe. There is
a brief chapter on Sources in the UK and with one click you can go to the
National Archives. I have a brief Introduction to Genetic Genealogy and one
on Social Media with links to sites with a more detailed explanation. This
is the first ebook published by JGSGB (Jewish Genealogical Society Great
Britain) who will benefit >from the sales. There are a few copies in print
format but we wanted it to be mainly published as an ebook. The second
edition of my Book was in 2006 and many telephone numbers and addresses of
Archives have changed as well as Internet sites and email addresses which
means that the second edition is now out of date. These have all been
updated. There is information on Passports both Internal and External. The
book contains the excellent chapter written by Nick Evans on Emigration
detailing how our Ancestors got to other Countries >from Latvia always
remembering that many Lithuanians may also have sailed >from Libau now
Liepaja.

THE URL is
http://shop.jgsgb.org.uk/

The book is listed under featured publications and you can buy it for £5.
You will receive am email giving you a username and password to access the
site in the future and another email with download details. The book is in
pdf format and easily navigable.
