Jan Meisels Allen

The (UK) National Archives is holding a free webinar on 11 October
18:00-19:00 BT. (Check http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/ to find out
the time in your area. Yes, for those in the UK, and other parts of the
world it will be held at the time Yom Kippur has started.but some other
parts of world it will be on before the holiday begins.)

Upon the outbreak of war, in September 1939, the lives of some 70,000

considered to be a potential threat to Britain were subject to civilian
internment. The webinar looks at tribunal official papers, individual
internees and the camps they were placed.

attic marriages and arranged marriages #austria-czech

rfc974@...

I tripped over an odd question this weekend. Were attic marriages arranged?

Context for folks for whom this question may be confusing. Attic
marriages (also called quiet marriages) is the term for couples who
wed before a rabbi but did not officially register the marriage,
because they did not have state permission to marry. In Bohemia, the
Familiant Laws restricted the ability to marry until about 1850. In
the families I'm descended from, attic marriages start to become
common in the 1830s or so. There's an open question as to whether the
visibility in the 1830s is a vagary of recording keeping rather than
showing an increase in attic marriages -- what happens is the
*children* of attic marriages start appearing in official birth
records -- there may have been just as many attic marriages before the
1830s but people didn't register the children -- and there are a
number of cases of parents finally getting a state marriage in the
early 1850s and registering all their [often adult] children in a
group which would support this theory.

In any case, this was also a time when virtually all marriages were
arranged, usually through a marriage broker. But if attic marriages
were arranged, then parents are conspiring with their children to
break the law and invite fines and punishment. So what motivated
parents to arrange the marriage? Or are attic marriages cases of
couples who conceived a child and an attic marriage was necessary?
Or...?

Any insights welcome,

Craig
