Lithuania SIG #Lithuania Looking for information on Reb Dovid'l of Vidzy and family #lithuania

Harold Berman

I have posted this request previously some years ago, but with the advent of
a new year, I am hoping that one of the old and or new members would be in
a position to possibly help with some new information or suggestions.

I am trying to trace the family of my maternal great grandfather Reb Dovid
Sudansky.

He according to family lore was the Rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva of the yeshiva in
VIDZY [WIDZE], possibly in the mid 1800's.

On page 142 in the Yiskor book of Vidzy there is mention of a Reb Dovid'l
of Widze, I am presuming that this refers to my great grandfather. I am
also trying to find out if it actually was my ggfather, and the
approximate time frame that this event took place.

I have been in contact with Eudice Harris who edited the Yiskor book, but
she couldn'tunfortunately offer any information on the matter.

The only other family facts that I am aware of is that my grandmother Paya
was born in 1864, and that she had three other sisters, one of whom,
Nachama, made Aliyah in the early 1900's. Of the other two sisters I have
no information at all. There was also a brother Hershel [TZVI] who made
Aliyah in the early 1930's. I have found mention of a TZVI Sudansky
who passed away in Israel during this period, but I found that there is no
connection to our family.

Again according to family lore, HERMANN JADLOWKER the chazzan and opera
singer was a cousin.

Any suggestions or assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks,

Help identifying the correct town of Lyubomyrka for Sam YURIK #bessarabia

Patricia Klindienst <epk13@...>

Dear Friends,

I need help figuring out which Lyubomyrka/Lyubomirka Sam YURIK came >from in 1914. The Gazetteer
offers me seven towns with this town name in Ukraine.

Sam YURIK was born in 1895-6 and came to the US in 1914. He joined the Jewish Legion in 1918. He
trained in Nova Scotia before being sent to England for more training with the Royal Fusiliers. He was
in the 39th battalion deployed to defend Palestine >from the Turks in WWI. I am writing his story based
on his letters home, photographs, and other documents, but tracing him back to his native town in
Russia, and finding anyone >from his family in Russia, has eluded me so far.

The only hint of Sam's origins is the ship manifest for his return to the US via Quebec after World War I.
The manifest is accompanied by a clearly inscribed card that indicates that Sam came >from Labomirka,
Russia. Sam did not write the card himself, so the spelling is guess work.

So far, my searches for the family name YURIK in a town with a name like Lyubomyrka in the Russian
Empire before 1914 have turned up very little information.

Does anyone have useful advice about where to turn next?

Since Sam never naturalized, but remained an alien till his death in 1966, there is no declaration of
intent or petition to naturalize, the forms that provide the most background information for immigrants
in this period.

I'd be very grateful for any help folks can offer me.

Thank you,

Patricia Klindienst

Re: Jewish Gen Conference in 2017 in Florida #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Hi everybody,

I only heard >from handful of people who are coming or not coming to Florida
conference.

In a few days the registration for SIG meetings, and for the lecture
proposals be over. I most likely will not be in Florida on a conference.
But we would be glad to help organize Bessarabia SIG meeting if there are
people coming to it.

Please let me or Inna Vayner know.

Re: Jewish Cemetery in Zalaegerszeg : Lack of data #hungary

HungarianRoots

Hi All,

I have visited the cemetery in Zalaegerszeg a couple of times and have the
contact details of the local Jewish community (led by Mr. Vilmos Siklos).
The cemetery is at the corner of two streets not far >from the center and is
very well maintained and clean.
I also have the telephone number of the woman who has the key to it.

LEt me know if you have any specific questions.

Regards,

Dear,

I am answering on a thread that came up in the group about the
Zalaegerszeg Jewish community and cemetery.

I will visit Zalaegerszeg soon, as an important part of my
scientifical work is done in the Archive there and make an inquiry
about how the things are standing. I am sorry, but I cannot give any
answer right now, except the fact that Zalaegerszeg's Jewish community
was one of the most important ones in the region, yet not much
historical data has stayed. I will let you know when I will have anz
new information. For further information I can be reached via my
email.

Best wishes,
