Re: Help identifying the correct town of Lyubomyrka for Sam YURIK #bessarabia

Richard Cooper

A search on the JewishGen Family Finder reveals two researchers who
are looking for relatives (with other surnames) in Lubomirka, Poland.
Poland in this instance may well include pre-WWI Congress Poland, much
of which today is in Ukraine.
This is interesting as the only places named Lubomirka appear to be
minuscule hamlets without a recorded Jewish community either past or
present.
I would recommend you contact those two researchers and swap notes.
The 38th to 42nd (Service) Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers was also
in WWI called the Judeans or Jewish Legion. Their history is well
documented. It is possible that Sam YURIK's service record still
exists, which might mention his birthplace. However, he is not listed
in the roll of any of the Judean Regiments or the Canadian Regiments
in the British Jewry Book of Honour.
I am copying this to Martin Sugarman, Archivist of the AJEX Museum,
who may be able to help you further if Sam YURIK did indeed serve,

Even if you got a Russian "translation" of the name, DRAHOFF, you
still might not have any more information. A lot of Russian jews
escaping the draft used their mother's maiden name or made big
changes to the name.

New Book on Holocaust #general

Dear Jewish Genners:

I am excited to tell you about the publication of my new book,
Esfir Is Alive, the fictionalized story of the real Esfir Manevich,
the only-known recorded survivor of the Brona Gora massacres of
50,000 Belorussian Jews in 1942. At the time, she was only twelve
years old.

Chronicling Esfir's life in Poland and Russia during the interwar
period, Esfir Is Alive portrays the destruction of a once-
flourishing people and their inspirational way of life. As the
author of Bashert: A Granddaughter's Holocaust Quest and the project
coordinator of the Yizkor book on Volchin, Belarus, I thought you
would be interested in my new novel as it includes important
historical information about life in the interwar period, the German
and Russian occupations, ghettoization, and the massacre at Brona
Gora.

You can find out more information about the book at my website
www.andreasimon.net or you can order it >from Amazon.com.

Thank you.
