Descendants of R' Chaim of Volozhin #general

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Trying again:

According to unconfirmed family sources, my greatgreatgrandmother,
Sarah Hinde KANTOR (her married name) was a descendant of R'Chaim of
Volozhin or at least of his extended family.

I do not know her maiden name her father's name was Yosef and was
known as "Schatz" as he was the chazzan of the main shul in Pinsk (or
Karlin). According to family stories, she or her mother were orphaned
at a young age and that Isaac, R' Chaim's son, took her to her wedding.

I've seen several family trees of R' Chaim's descendants and the only
thing that sounds familiar is that R' Yitzalehb(Chaim's son Isaac) had
a daughter who was married to LANDAU and both passed away relatively
young leaving unmarried children.

If "my" story sounds familiar to anyone I would be happy to hear.

TIA

Chicago congregation records #general

Jake Jacobs

Does anybody know whether congregation records exist for the former Congregation
Beth Hamidrash Hachodosh? I found a book on Google docs that said it consolidated
with Ohavo Amuno, into the new Congregation Ohavo Amuno Beth Hamedrosh Hachodosh.
The rabbi was L. Anixter (in the 1890s, when my g'g'grandparents belonged there).

Thanks for any information-

Dear Researchers,

The creation of a town-wide ancestry tree is an advanced strategy that
can reveal previously hidden connections. This is the purpose of the
Divenishok (Dieveniskes) Ancestral Tree which may be accessed via the
Diveniskes Kehilalinks Page. Researchers with any ancestry associated
with Divenishok are invited to join and discover.

Have you thought of contacting World Jewish Relief.

WJR's predecessor organisation the Central British Fund for German
Jewry was responsible for bringing 65,000 men, women and children
out of predominantly Germany and Austria but other places as well
between 1933 and beyond.

It is possible that both of your relatives were helped by WJR.

The WJR's archive is now fully searchable and it may be that they
have some records on your cousins.

The website address is www.worldjewishrelief.org

I hope this helps.

Looking for Volunteers experienced with Photoshop #lithuania

Joel Alpert <jalp@...>

The Yizkor-Book-In-Print project needs about 6 or more volunteers who
have and are experienced with Photoshop to help extract images >from jpg
files containing text and images, and do some minor processing. It is
for the publication of the Jonava Lithuania Memorial book. It would
require just a couple of hours of work and would be much appreciated.
Can you spare a few hours to help out? This is the last piece we need
in order to publish the book complete with images.

ALD Revision Lists -- Part 2 1908 entries: source and nature #lithuania

geoffisaacs <geoffisaacs@...>

Dear people,

I'm getting some families >from the All Lithuania Revision List
Database - Part 2 with entries dated 1908. However, in at least one case
a family member reported present in 1908 also appears in the 1910 US
Census as having arrived in the USA in 1905. And the family reports that
he got there by traveling to Liverpool, England and thence went to work
for a while in the mines in South Africa, and THEN to the US.

My question is, how might I reconcile the seeming conflict.

The Lithuanian family in question (>from Rokiskis/Zarasai/Kaunas) and the
equivalent USA family are:
In the USA the family are the direct descendants of Sholom E. Barr and
Toba Samet.

The Lithuanian family that fits the bill is the household of Idel and
Sora Bar, and it is their son, Sholom Ephroim Bar [b. abt. 1858] and his
children who most concern us. However Idel Bar [b. abt. 1835] is given
as the son of Sholom (is he just Idel bar Sholom, a straight Hebrew
name?) and Toyba/Tuybe Zamet, >from elsewhere in the ALDB is the daughter
of Volf Yankel Zamet.

The birth date of Sholom Ephraim is way out (1858 versus 1843, which
I'm told by the tree owner was a guess to make searching
easier), but just about everything else matches, and it adds to the
information on the Barr Family Tree on Ancestry Sholom's parents
Idel Bar [b. abt. 1835] and Sora unknown maiden name [b. abt. 1836]!

The equivalences as I guess them are:

Lithuania DB Barr Ancestry Tree
(administered by DBarrRet66, a DNA 3rd cousin of mine)

Shimel Leyba [b. abt. 1880] Simon L. [b. 1879] the person who is
in the USA by the end of 1905
Shmuel Itsik [b. abt. 1883] Issaac [b. 1885]
Nakhman [2 Oct 1898] Nathan [no birth date]
Ber [b.29 July1900] Barney [b. 1903]
Asna Leah [b. abt. 1885] Anna [b. 1886]
Sora Eta [b. abt. 1889] Sarah [b. 1889]
Dveyra [b. abt. 1891 Dora [b. 1896]
Wulf Yankel [b. 1 April 1893] Abe [b. 1890]??
Zalman Idel [b. 18 Dec1896] Jacob [b. 1895]?
Liba Reykha [b. abt. 1888], female no equivalent

The problem, as I see it, goes to how the data dated 1908 were gathered
and on what basis.

Thanks in advance for your help and regards >from sunny Brisbane,
Australia,
Geoff Isaacs
