Hi all,
I am hoping that someone in this group could guide me on this. I am at a
large brick wall with my Great Grandfather Abraham Weber. I have exhausted
all searches on Ancestry.com, MyHeritage and don't know where to begin on
JewishGen for this, there are so many Abraham Webers. He was born, according
to his tombstone, on Feb 20, 1863 and passed away on March 1, 1916. My uncle
said that he came >from Poland, others said Russia and still others say
Germany. It all depends on the map at that time. Now, there is no one left
to ask except the uncle who said Poland and he is very sick. I was hoping to
have found the country he came >from and his ship manifest before my uncle
passes, but it looks like this might not happen. I found the 1900 US Federal
Census and found him listed as Abram Wubber and immigrated to the US in 1891
from Russia. On the 1910 US Federal Census, it states that he immigrated to
the US in 1885. He did not apply for citizenship. He settled in Jersey City,
Hudson County, New Jersey. Another point regarding his year of birth, 1900
census shows him at 31 and 1910 census shows him as 29 and my great
grandmother as 41. Her name was Florence Kahn (Kannchel). She was born in
approximately 1870 and passed away in about 1911. Her tombstone was very
hard to read. They were buried in West Arlington Jewish Cemetery in West
Arlington New Jersey. I have a picture of his tombstone that I cannot attach
to this email, since it is in plain text.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Maybe you recall the PBS Frontline program called "Shtetl" >from 1996,
it was about the Shoah in the Polish town of Bransk. You may also be
aware of the magnificant book "Shtetl" by Eva Hoffman, also about
Bransk. Yizkor-Books-in-Print has now published the translation of
the original Yiddish Memorial book of Bransk, called "Bransk Book of
Memories." A descendant of Bransk, Rubin Roy Cobb lovingly
coordinated the translation of the book. This 476-page hard-cover book
is now available for sale for around $42. The cover by Rachel Kolokoff
Hopper is stunning. Formatting by Lynn Mercer.

The meaning of Wallach surname #ukraine

Marilyn Levinson

Dear researchers
I am researching the origin of the name Wallach. I understand it means
a foreigner or immigrant who speaks a romance language.
When these romance speaking people entered Germanic speaking lands they
were given the Germanic name Vlachs. Does this mean that my ancestors
traveled >from present day Italy or France and then east to Germany? Or
have I misunderstood the derivation of the name? I have had a DNA test
and I am 98 percent Ashkenazic but am not identified as having any
Sephardic DNA. Thank you for your help.
