Alliance Colony documentation #general

Toby Gass <tgass@...>

Hello,

Does anyone know of lists of people who came to the Alliance Colonies
that would have their names <before> they were Americanized? I am
interested in 1899 and 1904-1905. 1899 is the most important year.

I looked over the container list of the Baron de Hirsch archives, and
nothing looked likely. The HIAS website says their archives date back
only to 1909. I did see that they are working with AJHS on materials
that are apparently older than that, but I don't know what the materials
are, and the project isn't finished.

Thank you very much for your help!

Translation postcard in German #general

Tsiporah Trom

Hi,

I've posted a postcard in German on Viewmate at this address:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM60493

If a full translation in English is possible, please, it would mean so
much to me. Otherwise a transcription in German would also be great.

Some background information about this letter:

In 1919, Yaakov Gerstein (living in Hanover, Germany and married to Bayla
Breindel Ellowitz)
wrote to Meyer Flachs (living in Scheveningen, Netherlands and married to
Elka Ellowitz, a niece of Bayla Breindel).

In this letter, he mentions twice the Trom family of Sanok (written Sanog).
The mother, Chaya Yudit Trom, is also his wife's niece.
She had recently lost her husband in 1916 and was left with six small
children to raise on her own.

Chaya Yudit is my husband's great grandmother, she was later killed in
Auschwitz with three of her children.

Any information you can give me is very valuable to us.

Best regards and shana tova,

Geraldine Trom
Antwerp, Belgium

Is 'Wesse' the town of Jejse (Yeysi, Jaisa, Jaisi, Jajsi, Ya'isi) in Vilna, Belarus? #general

Netty 01 <netty_the_1st@...>

Hello JewishGen and fellow members,

I am attempting to trace the place of birth of my great grandfather Alfred
Lewis.

In my family tree album, my mother recorded:

Alfred Lewis
Born 1855
Place of Birth: Wesse, Poland (Russia)

Alfred Lewis migrated to Australia (via Manchester, England) in 1888. His
profession was master tailor.

I cannot find any references to Wesse, which I believe has been anglicized.
Google searches seemed to indicate Wesse may also be pronounced Jesse?
Using JewishGen, I have come up with Jejse [Polish], Belarus (also known as
Yeysi, Jaisa, Jaisi, Jajsi, Ya'isi).

The date of my great grandfather's birth in 1855 fits with the town being
part of the Russian empire, at that time.

This is what I found on JewishGen about Jejse:
https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/community.php?usbgn=A0027

I would appreciate any information to help me confirm the identity of Wesse.

Thanking you in anticipation

The city Mara Fein asks about is Mogilev-Podolskiy, which is in the
former Podolia gubernia of the Russian Empire. It lies on the Dnester
river, opposite the country of Moldova. The capital of Podolia was
Kamenets-Podolskiy. Most of Podolia, including these two cities, is
now in Ukraine.
