Tarnow Jewish Cemetery restoration and transcription projects #galicia

Howard Fink

Now that the long-awaited Tarnow Jewish Cemetery restoration project is
about to formally start I would like to provide details that have not been
made public while agreements were being finalized by the project
consortium.

There are several parts to this major project, overseen by Adam Bartosz,
the long-time Chairman of The Committee for Protection of Jewish
Heritage in Tarnow. Work on the restoration of the cemetery grounds is
already taking place under his direction, and a sample number of
gravestones were photographed and indexed last year by Professor
Leszek Hondo of Jagiellonian University and the Antyschematy
Foundation. Funding is >from a combination of public donations and a
European Community Grant.

I am pleased to announce that the photographing and transcription of the
thousands of gravestones will be carried out by the prestigious
Foundation for Documentation of Jewish Cemeteries (FDJC), a key
partner in the Tarnow Cemetery project. JRI-Poland has been keeping up
with the development of this project through our close cooperation with
the FDJC co-founder, Witold Wrzosinski. For Mr. Wrzosinski's remarks on
the importance of our collaboration, please see:
http://cemetery.jewish.org.pl/page/p_sponsors

The FDJC will index and photograph every legible grave marker in the
cemetery, including those already included in the sample project. The EU
grant requires that a single organization perform this work on the entire
site in a consistent manner.

JRI-Poland has collaborated with The Foundation since 2014 to make
their data available to the widest audience as well as to utilize the
multi-faceted JRI-Poland search engine options to dramatically increase
the potential for finding gravestones of interest to researchers. The
personal details in the JRI-Poland search results will include a link
directly to The Foundation's high quality images, which will include GPS
location information.

The data >from the Tarnow Cemetery will be added to both The
Foundation's and JRI-Poland's databases in late 2018.

You can read more details about earlier projects of the FDJC on our
website:
http://jri-poland.org/foundation-for-documentation-jewish-cemeteries.htm

and on their own website:

In the 1950s, Blime FEDER submitted Pages of Testimony to Yad Vashem
for both immediate family members and cousins. Piecing together her
documentation, her maiden name was likely GREENSHTEIN. She was from
the town of Horodenka, formerly part of Galicia, now in Ukraine.

I would like to be in touch with Blime FEDER's family to learn more
about her relatives who perished. Last known address for Blime was
from the 1950s when she lived in the 100 block of Rothschild Street in
Petach Tikva, Israel.
