Viewmate: Uniform identification #general

Tsiporah Trom

Hi,

I've posted a picture on Viewmate at the following link:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM66579

Could you help me identify the uniform this young man is wearing ?

The picture belonged to my great grandparents: Fiszel and Mechalina
GRUNBAUM/BAUMAN.
They were both born in Warsaw in 1877 and 1884.

The photographer who took this picture was in activity >from 1893 till 1909.

The number 3 appears on the cap the man is wearing.

My question: Is it be a soldier's uniform (military service or
Russo-Japanese war) or a policeman's uniform ?

There was a rumor in my family that my grandfather's brother (born in 1873)
was a policeman in Warsaw.
Not sure if it's true. And not sure it is him in this picture.

You can either answer me directly or on the Viewmate form.

Thank you.

Sephardic-Mizrahi Postal History & Ephemera Gallery - update #sephardic

R Laby <rlab78y@...>

Hello,

I have been updating the virtual archive of postcards, letters, documents,
and photos, which can be accessed and searched at:  semiph.piwigo.com

A link is also found at the SephardicGen website (database section).
There are now more than 5000 images >from online searches.  The archive is
arranged by geographic folders, and can also be searched by text (in name
of image).  About 3000 of the images have a family name within the image
name, and so can be searched directly by the quick text search.  Tagging
is incomplete- searching by tags is not efficient, except for the "ladino"
item tag which is completed.   Otherwise please scroll through each
geographic folder.

I am not asserting copyright and the images may be downloaded (click on,
select, drag & drop).  Registration is not required.  These images are for
personal use and research only.

Please contact me privately with any questions or comments.

Thanks,
Ron Laby

Ancestry Matches #dna

David Goldman

Hello fellow Jewishgenners. I am totally new to the issue of the DNA testing
(and just read some article online about who can get access to DNA
information >from genealogy research). I got my matches, and have contacted a
number of people who also did the Ancestry test. Only a couple have so far
replied, but one of them was classified as an "extremely high match" and I
saw the closeness based on having 204 centimorgans over 8 segments. Well, we
corresponded, and she told me that her mother's side was >from England/Wales,
and her father (who was adopted) had origins supposedly in the Balkans. The
only thing we had in common was that she lived in Alberta and I was born
there myself.
Can someone shed some light on this fog? How can this demonstrate an
"extremely high" likelihood of being 2nd-3rd cousins when there were no
common geographic origins at all?
Thanks,
David Goldman

Looking for relatives of Nathan Nuson PRASHKER #general

Terry Ashton

I am looking for information on Nathan Nuson PRASHKER, who was born in
Poland around 1862 to Chaskiel Dawid Praszkier and Hendel Praszkier
(nee Tausk). Nathan Nuson Prashker died on November 20th 1925 and is buried
in the Montefiore Cemetery, Springfield Gardens, Queens County, New York.
Apparently his wife was Goldie Prashker.
Nathan's brother, Israel Prashker, was my great grandfather.
I am interested in finding out more about this great great uncle of mine
and finding out who his children, grandchildren etc. may have been.

Many thanks

Re: Marriage Between First Cousins #ukraine

I tried, but to no avail. My paternal grandmother's sister married their first cousin and had the same last name,
same side of the family. The three children >from that union have since died, but I tried to get the grandchildren of
that union, at least one is male, to take a dna test to get a purer results of background. But he declined.

Wondering if anyone has done dna comparisons between double-cousin
relatives. For instance, supposing I have a third cousin whose parents
are first cousins? How much more gene sharing is there between me and
my third cousin than there would be otherwise? Can I just double the
amount of expected gene-sharing since he is my third cousin in two ways? This
is not just an academic question since the situation can and does come
up with certain frequency in my research. I've posted this to the DNA
board as well. Thanks in advance....

Seeking Rabbi Yehuda Leib MARGOLIS - Frankfort an der Oder, Germany: 1755-1770 #germany

Heshel Teitelbaum

Dear GerSIGers:

We are looking for civil registration records or Jewish communal
records >from Frankfort an der Oder, [Frankfurt] Germany >from 1755 to 1770.

Can someone tell us if such records exist and, if so, where they
can be accessed?

In particular, we are looking for information on Rabbi Yehuda Leib
MARGOLIS and his children. The family seems to have subsequently
moved to Jozefow in Poland. The one likely child of Yehuda Leib who
interests us most is a daughter who married a certain Yisroel / Israel
ben Yakov Kopel. Thank you

Re: Are most WEILLs leviyim? #rabbinic

Mordechai Perlman

Bezalel Weill of Topolcany, Slovakia <linktree@...> asked if Weills
are Leviyim.

My friend Alexander Weill, currently living in Baltimore, USA is not
a Levite. Neither is my friend Binyomin Weill >from Alsace, France.

Rav Nesanel Weil of Karlsruhe, Germany, the Korbon Nesanel, was not
a Levite, as his 7th generation ancestor, Rabbeinu Yaakov bar Yehuda Weill
of Augsberg, Germany was also not a Levite.

Often times i am asked if i am related to the Korban Nesanel (a commentary
on the Talmud) and i am quick to answer no because i believe the korban
nesanel was a levi (levite) whereas i am not a levi. I do find it
fascinating that the hebrew letters spelling my surname WEILL are similar to
those of Levi. Are there research tools or resources to determine if
perhaps my ancestors going back several generations were in fact leviyim?
