U.S. naturalizations covering spouses #general

David W. Perle

Hi, all. I've posted a while back about a great-great-grandfather
of mine about whom I've got good U.S. records in certain respects
(censuses 1910-1940, marriage certificate, children's birth
certificates, death certificate...) but have had a heck of a time
finding other records.

One such record has been his naturalization. I've found that for
probably every other family branch, but not him. He was a successful
construction businessman in Newark and was in the U.S. for decades.
It's hard to imagine that he was never naturalized. I also had a heck
of a time finding records about him or his second wife and her
daughter apart >from the 1940 census.

The other night, I finally saw a record come up Ancestry for that
second wife's 1936 naturalization with various bits of info to plug
into Ancestry, how exciting! It even provides her spouse's--my
great-great-grandfather's--information as to when he supposedly
arrived in the U.S.

It occurred to me--is it possible that *this* is actually his
naturalization as well, covered by his wife? Interestingly, Henry is
indicated as being naturalized already in the 1910 and 1920 censuses,
but is indicated as being "alien" in the 1930 census! (Yes, I realize
that specifics provided on the censuses should be taken with grains of
salt.)

So his wife's 1936 naturalization notes her husband and when he
arrived (I'm still having trouble finding him in arrival records via
Ancestry--various other Henry Gottliebs of course come up, I'm not
confident that any are he), but there's nothing that suggests that
he's already a citizen or not.

Help?

(Her naturalization is under her married name of Jenny Gottlieb,
naturalization formalized 1936. She was born in Vienna in 1883,
arrived in NYC in 1909. Spouse is my great-great-grandfather Henry
Gottlieb. They live in Newark at this time--he'd been there for
decades, living in NYC around the turn of the century. His birth year
is given here as 1879, though over the decades I found records
indicated a 10-year range of his year of birth, >from 1874-1884, oy.
This says that he arrived in NYC on March 12, 1896, supposedly...!)

(Netherlands) Europe's Drought Results in Gravestones Visible that Were Hidden Previously #sephardic

Jan Meisels Allen

Europe is having a prolonged heatwave and drought this summer. As a result
it has exposed buried gravestones, and the historic Beth Haim Portuguese
(Sephardic) Jewish cemetery at Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, located near
Amsterdam is the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Netherlands. The cemetery was
founded in 1614 and includes over 27,500 burials. The drought exposed stones
that had sunken over centuries which now have become visible.

For a searchable database of those who are buried there see:

Searching: Anna KATZ nee WILDER or HONIG, Brody --> Brooklyn #general

Joyce Eastman

I am hoping that someone can provide more information regarding Anna WILDER
who was married to Nesanel KATZ and resided in Brooklyn, NY. She was born
in Brody, Poland in 1871 and died on November 15, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY.
According to her burial record in JewishGen's JOWBR, her parents were Joseph
HONIG and Charlotte WILDER, which could be the "anglicized" names of Abraham
Joseph HONIG and Scheindel WILDER (my paternal great-grandparents). This
burial record also states that her Hebrew name was: "Chana Glikel bat
Abraham Joseph". This burial record was reported by her daughter Hesie
FUSFELD. I have searched for a ship manifest showing the passage for Anna
KATZ or Nesanel KATZ, as well as naturalization certificates and census
records, but have not been able to locate any of these documents in order to
find out more information.

The reason I am even more intrigued by this information is that my paternal
uncle stated in his request for immigration in Vienna, Austria that he had
family in the US. One of the people he mentioned was: Anna KATZ (his aunt)
living at 133 East 94th Street, in Brooklyn, NY. This request was made in
May 1938, and he would not have known that Anna KATZ had died in 1936.

If anyone has more information to share about Anna KATZ and her family,
please contact me privately.

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #general

Bruce Drake <BDrake@...>

"The Cheerful Baker," >from the Yizkor book of Piotrkow Trybunalski, Poland is
really two stories. The first part recounts Reb Itzhak Leib Rusak' work as the
town's baker, using his oven to cook the cholent brought to him by the
townspeople for the Sabbath, to baking the matzoh for Passover, and all the
elaborate preparations that required. But he was also a deeply devout and
learned man who would habitually say, "A person does not live just to bake
bread."

The part of the chapter you will read here shows his strength and courage as
the Nazis closed in on the Jews of the town.
