researching ZONANA family from Istanbul #sephardic

T S <vespertine_flight@...>

Dear all,

I'm researching the family background of my great-grandmother Louisa
Bakalar (nee ZONANA) (b. 1887). As far as I know, she was born in
Istanbul to Isaac Zonana and Ester Romano, and had at least six
siblings: Rebecca, Sultana, Sarina, Vitali (Chaim), Menahem and
Fortuna. Louisa married Moses (Moshe) Bakalar, >from Odessa, and
immigrated to NY in 1913. Any tips you could provide would be
greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Torin Spangler - vespertine_flight@hotmail.com

Cousin Discovery #dna

David Goldman

I was interested to know how DNA matches through Ancestry etc. end up being
tracked to people who although to all appearances have no relationship, end
up with a match whereby the person are a cousin by virtue of the results of
a non-marital pregnancy even 50-60 years ago.
I have just discovered a second cousin who said they didn't know their birth
father who it turns out was in fact an actual relative. Rather amazing.

indecipherable town name #general

Alyssa Freeman

Hi, All -
I've posted an image of a very small portion of my
great-grandfather's immigration record into Ellis Island in 1921. The
last two columns of this form asked for the country and town where the
person was born. For everyone else in the family, it says "RUSSIA
TIRASPOL." For my great-grandfather - the line above "TIRASPOL" - the
word seems to be missing some of the ink >from when it was typed and I
can't make it out. There's a ditto mark (") for the country, which
goes all the way to the first city listed for the first person on the
form. For that person, the old-style abbreviation "ROUM" for Romania
used. There are ditto marks all the way down >from there until you get
to "RUSSIA." I have tried Town Finder but there are 50 different towns
in Ukraine with a similar name, and he said he was >from Romania (which
holds up with everything else I know about the family). Can anyone
decipher this for me? Here's the link to the ViewMate image:

Thank you!

Does anyone know whether there is now an on-line database for Salem
Fields Cemetery in Brooklyn or whether there is a publishable list of
those buried there? The Cemetery belongs to Temple Emanu-El in New

How to order a NYC marriage certificate? #general

David Brostoff

I found a Oct. 10, 1909 marriage-license record in the New York, New
York, Extracted Marriage Index, 1866-1937, on Ancestry.com, for Tevia
BRENNER and Frunka BRESLOFF.

I want to order the certificate to see if, as I suspect, the bride's
name is actually Frumka BROSTOFF and BRESLOFF is a transcription error.

When I click "Purchase Certificate," I am taken to the order form for
NYC Records & Information Services and asked the following:

"I am ordering a:
Health Department Marriage Certificate
City Clerk Marriage License, Affidavit and Certificate"

Which of these should I choose?

Thank you,

David Brostoff

some of these documents and we are now making those images available via a
link in the search results of the Miriam Weiner Archive search engine:

www.jewishgen.org/Belarus/misc/MWA/

Thanks again to Miriam for donating this invaluable material to us and making
it freely available to researchers

The speaker at the JewishGen Belarus SIG luncheon was Sharon Rennert, independent
filmmaker and granddaughter of Holocaust hero Tuvia Bielski. Sharon
talked about her travel experiences when she visited sites >from her grandfather's
past. Thanks again to Sharon for her interesting and moving talk
.

Thanks to Avraham Groll, Warren Blatt and Michael Tobias at JewishGen for
their ongoing support and guidance. Avraham had a very nice tribute to Ruth
Silver z'l, our Data Acquisitions Coordinator, who passed away suddenly
on June 25. May her memory be a blessing.

Finally, thanks to all the researchers who have supported our past and present
projects. We hope the coming year will be even more productive.
