Re: "X" by respondents name in the census #general

Shana Tova Alyssa,

See the US Census website at https://1940census.archives.gov/faq.asp
which states "This indicates who gave the information to the census taker."

I suspect that the 1936 death date you have may be for a different person
with the same name, as your relative was "alive enough" to have been the one
to talk to the census taker in 1940.

Has anyone run across a census for a relative with an "X" by
their name? Does anyone know what that means? I have a relative who
died in 1936 but shows up in the 1940 census with an "X" by her name.
her husband and children don't have the X's. How can she be in the
< census?

ITMAN and STABUN #general

Angie Elfassi

Hi,

I have recently understood that ITMAN is my ggrandmother Chaya's maiden name.
Her father was Benjamin. When she moved to Leeds, UK she became Annie. In
Lithuania she had married Yosel Reichzeligman and in the UK the family changed
the surname to Richman.

On LitvakSIG I have found what I believe to be a brother of hers:

In 1900 ITMAN, Abram Itzko m. STABUN, Riva Dvora (her maiden name was ZUBITZKY),
they were both widowers.

Im looking for more information about Abram Itzko ITMAN.

Does anyone have any information about him?

LitvakSIG All-Lithuania Database - 76,000 new records online now #general

Russ Maurer

The quarterly addition of new data to the LitvakSIG All Lithuania Database
(ALD) is now searchable online. The ALD is free and may be searched
by any researcher >from the LitvakSIG home page, www.litvaksig.org . The
summary below describes the 76,627 lines of new data just added.

Revision List template (42,049 lines): Kaunas Gubernia farmer lists, early
20th century Jewish censuses for Radun and Lida town, conscription lists
for Marijampole and Vilnius, 1834 census for Vilnius city and other places
in Vilna Gubernia, and a 1915 list of residents of the Panevezys district.
A new data set making its debut in the ALD is the "Emigration to Eretz
Israel" documenting those, >from throughout Lithuania, who received
permission to emigrate in the interwar years. Indexing of this data set is
ongoing. The nearly 6,975 lines included in this upload is only the first
installment.

Tax / Voters template (32,087 lines): a major new record set, the 1941
Kaunas voter list, accounts for almost all of these lines.

Vital records (1071 lines): Marriages and births for Klaipeda, 1874-1915.

Internal passports (1420 lines): Vilnius foreign passport applications.

Results >from ALD searches will be grouped by template. Note that
the template name may not necessarily describe the kind of data
accurately, e.g., the Revision List template is used for data sets such
as lists of farmers and conscription lists, not just revision lists. Please
look at all search results even if you don't think the template type is
relevant to your search. You just never know what you'll find.

Hi all,
Is it possible that the discrepancy is simply the difference between
the Gregorian and Julian dates? Ten days apart is about right.

Obtaining death certificates from Puerto Rico? #general

David W. Perle

Happy fall, all!

I'm having a bit of an ordeal trying to obtain the death certificate of my
great-grandfather who died while living in Puerto Rico in 1965. Basically,
they only provide to immediate family or to an "heir," and an heir needs a
legal "need" for it. I'm going through VitalChek (which I believe is the
only avenue) for ordering the copy, a VitalChek rep handling Puerto Rico
requests told me a couple of weeks ago that I count as an heir, but she was
apparently mistaken. I tried justifying my request that the family wants
the record not only for genealogical purposes but also in order obtain
important genetic family health information with regard to cause of death.
No dice.

I've been told more than once and I think more than twice that only mother,
father, spouse, child may order a copy otherwise. Obviously, most of that
is absurd for an adult great-grandchild in 2018 to be contacting them about
concerning someone who died in 1965.

Between Ohio, New Jersey, Florida, and New York, I have never heard of such
a thing where they tell you that you basically have no right to your
great-grandfather's death certificate >from 53 years ago.

Help?
