Helene LOEWENHEIM Chemist: Biographical details wanted #germany

Peter Lowe <Peter.Lowe@...>

My paternal ancestor had the surname LOEWENHEIM. As it is a fairly rare
surname, I have worked for decades on the surname as a One-Name Study.

I recently came across some information on a Dr Helene LOWENHEIM and I
am seeking more details about her. In particular:
Names of her Parents ?
Was she married ?
When & where was she born ?
When & where did she die ?
Was she Jewish ?

Her name appears on many webpages as she was an organic chemist who
jointly, in 1920 in Hamm in Westfalen, synthesized the compound,
hydrocodone. Decades later it became a major opioid drug in the USA.
Fans of Hugh LAURIE's House series will know it as vicodone to which Dr
House was addicted.

I have found a reference suggesting that she was studying at Goettingen
University in 1918 and probably obtained her doctorate there in 1920.
Also some scientific papers written by Helene >from the period 1920-1927.

I believe that she was the Dr Helene LOWENHEIM listed in the Berlin
street directories dated between 1934 and 1940 as Apotheker in Berlin
Tempelhof.

Beyond that I haven't found anything definite about her.

Any information, or suggestions would be wonderful

Thank you, Peter Lowe, Hertford, England peter.lowe@...

Siedlce Yiskor Book #general

David Mink <daminker@...>

The Sefer Yizkor le-Kehilot Shedlets (Memorial Book of the Community of Siedlce) is
the most extensive compilation of the Siedlce community of Poland before WWII.
Published in Yiddish and Hebrew, in Buenos Aires, 1956, the book reconstructs the
social, political, and religious fabric in this city of 15,000 Jews. The chapters
were written by the citizens and survivors of the city. They paint a thorough
picture of life there. Translating this book will open up this vital resource
beyond the Yiddish speaking community, and it will serve as a vital tool for
academics as well as genealogists.

This translation project is facilitated by JewishGen.org. They have overseen the
translation of many such books and avail the translations on their website. The
cost of translating this book has been set at $5000.00. We have raised $2000.00 so
far. Can you contribute $18.00 or $36.00 to insure that this work gets completed?
Here is the link for the book;

Warsaw Poland Geneology Search #general

Sandy Calire <slcalire@...>

Would anyone kindly be able to provide some advice?

My Grandfather was born in Otwock, Poland in 1914 and my Grandparents were found on
the 1948 Warsaw Jews WWII survivors list. The United States Holocaust Museum found
a document that provided their parents names. I would like to find out more about
my Jewish ancestors, great-grandparents.

This week I was invited to a convention in Warsaw, Poland, August 5-13, 2019. It
will be my first trip to Europe and Poland. If I wanted to research additional
information about my ancestors, what would be the best way to approach this? I
have not found anything additional with the www.ancestry.com, familysearch.com,
jewishgen databases etc. The surnames are Rosenberg, Wasserstrum & Domb. Can
you recommend any services while I would be in Poland? Or advice as to
how to pursue additional research?

Thank you in advance for any help or direction you may be able to provide.

Respectfully,

Sandy Calire
