JewishGen's NY Genealogy Course starts June 14 #warsaw #poland

Nancy Siegel

So many of our immigrant ancestors lived in New York City -- they
started on the Lower East Side and upgraded to the Bronx and Brooklyn;
their children moved to Queens, Westchester, Long Island and New
Jersey.

We have census reports >from Ancestry and vital records from
ItalianGen, but this class will focus on the more esoteric documents
our ancestors generated, including probate, landsmanshaften, voter
registration, newspapers, and court case records.

This is an intermediate level genealogy course with eight text lessons
you can download; there are no specific times for the course as
students are international. Students will select a branch to research
and receive daily advice and suggestions >from the instructor through a
24/7 Forum, in a query and answer format. Students must feel
comfortable browsing the web and downloading files, have 8-10 hours
available each week, and should select one NYC family where census and
vital records are already documented.

Tuition is $150; registration is open at:
https://www.jewishgen.org/education/description.asp?course=40135

For questions, please email the instructor: Phyllis Kramer,
JewishGen's VP of Education, born and bred in NYC; she will lead you
through it.

My first trip to Ukraine, the birthplace of my paternal grandfather, was
over 20 years ago. I have written about and lectured to genealogists many
times about my travel there in 1997 with my family, and then again in 1999
as a JewishGen Shtetlshlepper Group Leader.

As owner of the KehilaLinks website about Lyubar, I have shared my
experiences as well as information about retrieving documents and about the
history of the Jews of Lyubar, Ukraine where my KARGER and SHINDELMAN family
lived for at least 150 years.

In an extraordinary turn of events, material and photos >from the Lyubar
website < https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/Lyubar/ > is being used by a
German-government funded group called "The Protecting Memory Project" to
erect a memorial on two mass gravesites in Lyubar where relatives were
murdered in 1941. I have been invited to speak at the Opening Ceremony in
Lyubar, Ukraine on June 20, 2019.

If interested, you are invited to follow my travel journal on Tripcast which
will contain photos, videos, and notes about my trip back to 'Ukraine in
2019' by signing up at < https://tripcast.co/i/KG3Q3FJE >

(US) New York State Substitutes for the Lost 1890 Census #general

Jan Meisels Allen

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society has an article in their
blog about substitutes for the Lost 1890 US census. Their article talks of
three substitutes for the census that was all but destroyed:

1890 Veterans Schedule this schedule survived for New York as well as other
states. It will include the name of the military person, rank, company,
regiment name, date of enlistment and discharge, length of service, post
office address, whether a disability occurred and additional remarks. It is
available on Ancestry.com a subscription service which is also available at
many public libraries and FamilySearch.org.

1890 New York City "Police" Census
In 1890 New York City consisted of Manhattan and western half of Bronx. The
Police Census is called such as the police were the enumerators.
FamilySearch.org released an index that covers the majority of the 1,008
books of which 894 survive today. The surviving books are available on
Family History Library microfilm and can be searched at:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2381996

1892 New York State Census
New York State took its own census every ten years between 1825 and 1925.
They skipped 1895 due to political and bureaucratic problems jumping to the
1892 census. Forty of the state's counties survived. Information including
name, age, gender, race, birthplace ( country), citizenship status and
occupation are all documented >from the census. To search the 1892 Census
see: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1529100

Above are the three alternate choices for substituting the census. To read
the entire article may be found at:\

I have posted what I believe to be a record of the birth of a son to my great
grandparents who lived in Poland. I understand it to be written in Russian and
would be most grateful for an English translation. It can be found on
ViewMate through the following link:

I would greatly appreciate any help you may be able to give me concerning the place
and date of birth, names of child and parents (there seem to have been a number of
variations of the latter), and ask if you could please respond via the form
provided on the ViewMate image page.

Thank you very much for your assistance.
