Translation From Yiddish and Russian #belarus

Hello Everyone,
I have a letter that was written by my great-grandfather >from Belarus to
my grandfather in the US that I would love to have translated. It
appears to be a mixture of old Russian and Yiddish. If anyone thinks
they might be able to help with this, please contact me. My 88 year old
mother would be so delighted.

The titles of GenAmi 88, France #general

Micheline GUTMANN

The titles of GenAmi 88:
At Evian conference in 1938: nobody wants to receive German Jews under threat.
A memory trip to the borders of Poland and Lithuania (Przerosl, Bialystok,
Suwalki, Tykocin, Ziezmariai, Merkin, Druskininkai).
Jozef Israels, painter of social realism in the Netherlands and his ancestry.
Recently the tomb of Man Ray was desecrated, the stele reversed and his
portrait broken, we speak of this great artist.
Good bye Angela! Angela Shire, a great English genealogist who helped me so
much, has died.
As always, an interesting book review.

Searching for EPEL family in Riga #latvia

luciana gandelman

Dear Genners,
I am beginning my genealogical research on my grandmother's family
from Riga. My great grandfather, Samuel Epel, came to Brazil >from Riga
around the year of 1912. As family history goes, he came ahead of the
rest of the family. Around the year of 1919 he located the family with
the help of the Red Cross and they were reunited in Brazil. So far, we
were unable to locate their names on any brazilian passenger's lists
arriving >from Europe.
I was wondering if any of you could help me with the following:
1) What could have been the most common route for migrants traveling
by ship >from Riga to South America? Any clues? Are there any sources to
research passengers/ships leaving Riga between 1912 and 1919?
2) Is it possible to find Red Cross documents/sources for people
living in Riga between 1912-1919? Would it be possible to find
documents/information on my great grandfather's search for his family
and how they were relocated to Brazil?
I am already doing research about the family with the Latvian National
Archives.
Thank you in advance,
Luciana Gandelman

Do you recognize (Washington-Baltimore area) ? #general

boris

The photo was taken in February 1982 in Rockville, MD when Itzkhak KAMINSKY
of Israel (second >from the right) visited Abram VIZHANSKY ((standing). The
assumption is that the two unidentified couples, who are most likely
deceased by now, lived in the metro Washington-Baltimore area.

A note to KAMINSKY researchers. This was not Itzkhak's birth name. He assumed the
name in the 1950's to facilitate the escape >from the Soviet Union although he
lived under this name for the rest of his life. So, this is not a lead for you,
sorry.

Emigration path from the Cherkassy region #ukraine

Felissa Lashley

I am trying to find out what the typical path to the U.S. would have
entailed for immigrants in the early 1900s >from the Cherkassy area of
the Ukraine. How might they have travelled >from their village to a
port? If they went first to Great Britain and then to the U.S. how did
they know where to stay? When they arrived at Ellis Island or Boston
was there a network of help for these immigrants? What did travel by
steerage mean? What were sleeping arrangements? Would appreciate any
help in understanding the brave journey of my ancetors.

Thank you for any insights.
