Are Lesko and Sanok (former Galicia) nearby any of the 13 towns in the

Khag Sameakh! Just prior to Rosh Hashanah, Stanley Diamond, Project
Coordinator for Jewish Records Indexing - Poland announced an
exciting new
project to index vital records for 82 towns in East Galicia that are
maintained in the AGAD Archives in Warsaw.
[snip]
The first region within East Galicia to be indexed will be the area
in the
far Northeast of the former Austro-Hungarian Province of Galicia.
The 13
towns in this region whose vital records will be indexed are:

Brzezany
Kozlow
Kozowa
Mikulince
Narajow
Podwoloczyska
Skalat
Strusow
Tarnopol
Trembowla
Zalozce
Zbaraz
Zborow

If your ancestral town does not appear above but is near one of
these towns,
don't be discouraged. The Jewish communities in many smaller towns
near these
13 District and Sub-District towns of the former Galician Province
of Austria
were required to register their vital events in these 13 towns.

Re: Jewish calendar Why 5761? #general

Hello.
The current chronology of jewish years: 5761, was calculated in the IV
century, currrent chronology..
It was made adding the age that Adan had when Set born (year 130), later
the
age of Set when Enos born (105) till Lamec when Noe born (year 1056 year)
When the "Flood" occurred Noe was 600 years old (jewish year 1656).
46rom Flood till Abraham 292 years, when Issac born other 100 years, oth
er 60
years till Jacob's born, plus 147 years till the death of Jacob in Egypt,
more 53 years till death of Joseph and 140 till the Exodus >from Egypt. It

was in 2449 jewish ch. according calculation, the first Temple in 2929 j.
c., the destruction of first Temple in 3339, the second Temple was built
in
3409, the destruction of the second Temple was in 3829 or 69/70 current
chronology
This chronology was used first in Italy and later spreaded by all world.
In 1150/80, in Spain, Abraham Ibn Daud, re-calculated the figures and made

some corrections and 330 years later, in 1510, Abraham de Torrutiel
continued the Ibn Dauds work.
In the century XVII, in Oxford some scholars made the christian calculati
on
and the figure was 4004 years before Jesus born, instead our 3760. Really
Jesus born in year 6 or 7, not in zero.
The matter is not if the figures are good or not, it is only a fixed
chronology, used to have comparative dates. Before it was used the
Seleucides chronology and others.
The jewish ortodox people think thats this age, 5761 is the real age of
the
world, and they discussed if the chronology must be calculated >from the
creation of the world or the creation of the Adan, it occurs in the saturday
night, after Shabat finished at 10 hs and 11 minutes. p.m.
More important (for our religion) that this chronology is the Luaj, the
jewish calender, calculated by Hillel II in the III century. It is other
history!!!
Hope to be clear

I'm not sure what you meant by "the recent way of counting" -- there's
nothing "recent" about the Jewish calendar! The number 5,761 since "the
creation of the world" is arrived at by adding up the (faulty)
chronologies in the Bible itself. Of course most Jews today, indeed most
Bible-readers of any persuasion, take this number as purely symbolic, since
there is overwhelming evidence that the cosmos is in fact millions of years
old,

There's an article on "Calendar" in the Encyclopaedia Judaica, Vol. 5,
which tells far more about it than any of us will ever need to know!
However, at column 48 the article informs us that a tradition attributed to
Hai Ga'on (d. 1038) claims that the present calendar was introduced by the
Patriarch Hillel II in 359 C.E. (i.e. 359 A.D.).

Even if Hai Ga'on's claim is historically incorrect, it at least implies
that the present calendar was already in existence when he lived, 1,000
years ago -- and its actual origins clearly go back a lot further than
that. As I said, nothing "recent" about it at all!

In reference to my post yesterday about sending money to Poland,
I received an additional suggestion today:

6) Get an international money order >from American Express.
This should cost about $10.00. If you have an American
Express credit card, I have been told that they waive the fee.
I hope this helps.

"Has anyone gone to Lemberg (Galicia and/or Kaminsky Polosky

Good question! Check out the JewishGen ShtetlSchleppers

around, having guides knowledgeable in the local language, able
to read & translate gravestones...etc.

The Value of a Ruble #poland

Paul NMN B

Hello,

In 1910, my Great-grandmother arrived with four children and because two of
the children had ringworm, they were all placed in the Ellis Island hospital.
A Special Inquiry was held by the INS and all family members already in New
York City were interviewed.

My Great-grandmother was asked if her husband ever sent money to Poland to
help support her and the children. She replied that she received "20 Rubles
each month."

If anyone has had experience in how I can find out the value of "20 Rubles"
in 1910 US Dollars, I would certainly appreciate it.

Thanks for your help.

Ps: By requesting the files of the Special Medical Inquiry files, I received
sixteen pages of testimony, containing fascinating information about my
GGgrandparents and my Grandfather.
