Are there
similar maps showing most common routes E. European Jews took from

there
is a book about Jewish migrations >from E. Europe to US I could purchase

would include maps. Any info appreciated.

I would greatly appreciate any information of such maps, but
also all information about emigration routes.

Re: my MARCUS #belarus

Linda D. Epstein <lepstein@...>

The MARCUS in my family is as such:

Sam Saffian (b 1893 Makow Poland) married Bella Marcus (b. Dec 1900, d.
May 1987 in Los Angeles CA). I am told that Bella was a cousin of the
same Marcus of Neiman-Marcus.

Sam and Bella had three children, Morris Ray Allen, Robert and Saul.

Saffian could well have changed to Safian in that family.

If these people ring a bell, do email me!

Castle Garden Immigration Records #belarus

theentins <theentins@...>

There have been many posts on the various SIG's and digests concerning the
existence (or destruction by fire) of the Castle Garden immigration records.
(See JewishGen digest archives.)

I know that NARA and the LDS have the New York passenger arrivals during the
Castle Garden priod (to 1892) on microfilm.

What I am led to believe was that if any records were destroyed, it was
indexes. As we know there is no New York passenger ship index for 1848-1892.

Since Ellis Island records were recently made available rather quickly over
the past few years, the the same could be done (especially if they were
digitized) with the Castle Garden records.

Does anyone know the true facts of the Castle Garden fire?

Does anyone know of any plan to index the New York passenger ship records?

I, too, had been searching for my father's ship manifest based on the
information he provided on naturalaization documents. Because of the EI
database, I now know that he listed his date of emigration as his date
of arrival. Hope this helps.

Chernigov or Gomel Gubernia??? #belarus

David Goldman <davic@...>

I had been under the impression >from research that the town my grandfather
had lived in, Surazh, was part of the Chernigov gubernia. However, on his
documents upon arrival in Canada in 1922, he and his siblings indicated
that Surazh was in the Gomel Gubernia. This Surazh is the one near
Novozhibkov and Bryansk.
Can anyone on the Belarus SIG help me make sense of this so I can know what
direction to go in for archival research?

Thanks,

David Goldman

I thought the group would find the following news report of interest:

Rand Fishbein
Potomac, Maryland

from "Arutz-7 Editor" <neteditor@israelnationalnews.com>
MORE JEWS DISCOVERED
Yisrael Rashal, Jewish Agency emissary in Odessa, told Arutz-7 today about the discovery of a hitherto unknown Jewish community in southern
Ukraine: "About six weeks ago, in the little town of Konetzpol, which
means 'end of the field,' a small community of 50 Jews - two or three
families worth - was discovered... until now they did not want to be
discovered, but they suddenly decided that they wanted a connection, and
began showing interest in Israel and Aliyah [immigration to Israel]. They turned to a neighboring Jewish community, and now they are studying
Hebrew... The 'leader' of the tribe is an 80-year-old woman, who is now
studying Hebrew in the same 'ulpan' together with her family of 24
including her great-grandson who is 1.5 years old... Yes, there could be
many other little communities like this throughout Russia......."
